“Oriana,” he amended as he sat on the table facing me, but on the other side so he wouldn’t block the detective.

“As fun as this has all been, I’d like to go home,” I told the detective.

He didn’t miss a beat. “Then we can finally get to the point.”

Clark's smile faded as he made eye contact with the man behind me. “You were with Callahan today, weren’t you, Prescott?”

So he was there with the mayor. Very interesting. Silently, I was jotting down Prescott’s name for research. Anyone friendly with the mayor was on a list I should thoroughly search.

“Yes,” was all Prescott said.

Clark’s eyes turned from Prescott to me. “What were you doing there,Oriana?”

I caught the bite on my name.

“I had business to attend to,” I lamely added, hoping it would be enough.

“I thought you said you weren’t a hoochie.” The detective smirked at me.

My mouth opened and closed. I got the feeling this wasn’t how they normally conducted business.

“I was tailing Mayor Callahan,” I reluctantly told them, already having a feeling that it wouldn’t go over well with them.

The detective burst out laughing.

“You were what?” Clark hissed.

“I should probably start from the beginning,” I murmured.

“That would be wise,” Prescott said with one hell of a poker face.

He went to stand next to Dex, and I felt like I was being buried under their scrutinizing gazes.

“I’m investigating Mayor Callahan,” I stated proudly.

“Is that so?” Clark’s voice was eerily calm.

My hands started to get sweaty, so I put them in the pockets of my pants.

“As you can see, this is all a misunderstanding, and I can go home now.” I slowly started to move toward the door.

“Are you a cop?” Prescott asked.

“Ah, nope.” I shook my head as I took another step backward.

“Detective?” The actual detective asked.

“Obviously not,” I sassed as I took another step back.

Clark, who had remained quiet, and who I hoped would be the voice of reason, observed me. For the first time tonight, our gazes locked. His dark blue eyes held my stare for a few seconds before they slid down and up my body. Sweet baby Jesus, did I feel parts of me that had no business tingling…tingle.

I was certainly not sixteen anymore. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as gifted as my sister in our assets. My breasts were smaller but perky and my waist small, but I liked to think I’d lucked out in the ass department.

“Are you with the feds?” Clark finally asked in a sarcastic tone.

I was going to say yes just to spite them, but Clark lifted a brow daring me to do so, and I didn’t want to find out what would happen if I did. My shoulders sagged. I needed to wrap this up and go back home.

“No.”
