But I had this.

I motherfucking had—

“Eat that, asshole.” I cut right, skating around the goal while Austin was left to retrieve the puck from inside his net.

“Better,” Aiden yelled. “Much fucking better.”

I skated over to Leon and held up my hand. He slapped his glove against mine, grinning like the cat who got the canary.

“Nice work, rookie.”

“Thanks, man.”

Aiden called us in, and we all joined the huddle. “We’re looking better. Keep it up, and we might stand a shot at the Frozen Four yet. Official practice starts Monday, but I think Coach Tucker will be impressed with where we’re at. Good work, everyone.”

“We heading straight to TPB?” Connor asked me as I pulled off my helmet.

“I can’t tonight.”

“What, why not?”

“I have a thing.” I shrugged, trying to play it cool.

“A thing”—Mase stuck his head between us—“You mean a booty call.”

“Nope.”

“A date then?” He cocked his brow, concern shining in his eyes.

“Come on, Mase, you know me better than that.”

“Mase is right, Holden. You’re being awfully evasive.”

“If you must know, I’m meeting Sam to study, happy?”

“Study, is that what we’re calling it now?”

“It’s true. She turned up in my accounting class and offered to help me ace the semester. Fuck knows I’m going to need all the help I can get,” I muttered as we headed off the ice and down the walkway into the locker room.

“Study buddies,” Connor tsked. “That’s the oldest trick in the book. First, you’ll be reciting the accounting principles, and then, you’ll be banging her over the desk.”

“Not going to happen,” I said over my shoulder.

“Famous last words, Holden. Famous. Last. Words.”

They didn’t know that Sam was just a cover. That I’d be out with Aurora, hopefully kissing the fuck out of her.

A flash of heat went through me. I’d never chased a girl before. They usually fell in my lap or turned up at my door half-naked. But I liked it.

I liked working for it, knowing that the reward would be oh-so-sweet.

“What’s going on?” Austin asked, barreling past me and dropping onto his bench.

“Holden has a study date with Sam.”

“It’s not a study date, asshole. It’s a study meeting.”

“Seriously, you’re going to blow off Happy Hour at TPB for studying?
