I noticed he took the road heading out of Lakeshore and said, “We’re leaving town?”

“Figured it was for the best.” He shot me a playful smile. “Besides, this way, I get you all to myself.”

“I like the sound of that,” I whispered, wondering who this girl was. Because I didn’t date or put myself out there. But Noah made me want things.

Scary things I hadn’t allowed myself to want since Ben broke my heart into a thousand pieces.

“What’s your cover story? For tonight, I mean? Actually, don’t answer that. I don’t want to know,” I chuckled, but it came out strangled.

“You don’t need to worry, I promise.” Noah reached over and grabbed my hand, pulling it on his knee.

It felt awfully intimate. But then, everything did with Noah. Every time he smiled at me, the rest of the world melted away, leaving just the two of us.

Only that was the fantasy. The reality was much different.

“What’s going on in that head of yours?” he asked, threading his fingers between mine.

I went with the truth.

“I’m still not sure what I’m doing here, Noah.”

“You owe me one night, remember?”

He grinned. I nodded.

One night.

Was that all he—

“Don’t look so worried. I like you, shortcake. And I’m pretty sure you like me. So we’re just two people who like each other spending time together. Does it need to be anything more than that?”

Insecure Aurora wanted to tell him it did. But I wasn’t that girl tonight.

I wasn’t.

So I pasted on a smile and said, “No, it doesn’t.”

Even though my heart silently roared liar.

“What is this place?” I asked Noah as he pulled into a parking lot behind a small, old building.

“The Regal Movie Theater.”

“We’re watching a movie?” I don’t know why, but it wasn’t exactly what I’d imagined when Noah asked me out.

“We are. Don’t sound so disappointed,” he chuckled.

“Disappointed, no. Confused, a little,” I admitted.

“It’ll make more sense once we get inside. Come on.”

He climbed and came around to open my door, helping me out. My feet had barely touched the ground when he’d pulled me into his arms, gazing down at me with a softness that stole my breath. “Hi,” he said.

“Hi.”

“I’ve been waiting to do this ever since you came out of the house.” His hand glided along the side of my neck, holding me while his mouth sealed over mine, and he kissed me, slow and soft and oh-so-perfect.

“Mmm,” I murmured, overwhelmed by the feel of his lips on mine, kissing me. The woodsy scent of his cologne.
