“What the fuck?” I balked. “Did she say that? Because it’s a fucking lie, shortcake. I have never taken anyone else there, I swear.”

“Why would she say that?”

Why indeed. I shoved down the anger bubbling inside me and focused on Aurora.

“I’ll deal with Sam.” She nodded, and I moved on. “We’ve never had a girl in our group chat before.”

“That is not a thing.” Aurora fought a smile.

“Sure it is.”

“I’m not giving you that one. Austin only added me to the group chat to coerce me into the costume party.”

“Okay, then, what about this one.” I leaned down, brushing my mouth over hers. Once. Twice. Aurora’s eyes fluttered, the softest whimper escaping her lips as I pulled away. “I have never felt this way before, shortcake,” I whispered. “You do something to me, and I’m not ready to give that up yet.”

“You’re making it really hard for me to say no to you.”

“So don’t.” I touched my head to hers.

“You’re going to break my heart,” she said—a definitive, bold statement. As if there was no doubt in her mind that this ended any other way.

It didn’t sit well with me that she was so convinced I would hurt her.

But then, I hadn’t exactly proved otherwise.

Brushing my knuckles down her cheek, I pressed a kiss to her brow. “Just think about it,” I said before pulling away.

“Where are you going?” she asked, eyes cloudy with confusion as I walked backward toward the door.

“Giving you some space.”

“What if I don’t want space?”

“I’m not going to let you use me for my irresistible body, shortcake.” I winked. “If you want me, you have to be prepared to accept me. All of me.”

“I—”

“Don’t make a decision now. Sleep on it.”

“Sleep? You think I’m going to get even a wink of sleep after this conversation.”

The corner of my mouth lifted in a faint smirk as I forced myself to grab the handle.

“Welcome to my world, shortcake.”

I lay in bed, cell phone in hand, one arm tucked under my head as I stared up at the ceiling, debating on whether or not enough time had passed before I texted her.

I didn’t want to look needy or too keen.

Oh, who the fuck was I kidding?

After making her doubt herself—and me, for that matter—I wanted to make sure Aurora knew exactly where my head was at regarding her and our relationship.

Relationship, fuck.

I was getting ahead of myself.

I’d be lucky if she would even agree to another date, let alone anything more… serious.
