Noah: I was hoping we could have breakfast together.

Aurora: With Connor and my brother? How romantic and totally not awkward…

Noah: Austin stayed out all night and Connor would have made himself scarce.

Aurora: They can’t know about us, Noah.

Noah: For now…

Aurora: What are you saying?

Shit, what was I saying?

Austin would kick my ass six ways from Sunday if he knew I’d been fooling around with his sister. It wouldn’t matter what my intentions were or what Aurora had to say about it because he thought we were the same.

That I was like him.

And I guess I was.

At least, I used to be.

Besides, hadn’t Connor literally just told me to make the right decision? Pretty sure he wasn’t giving me the green light to pursue Aurora.

My cell chimed again.

Aurora: Noah?

Fuck. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t make good choices where she was concerned because Aurora Hart was under my skin. And I didn’t want to dig her out.

Noah: I’ll see you later, shortcake.

She couldn’t hide from me all day.

I drained the rest of my coffee and stood, formulating a plan of action. I wanted to give Aurora space, but patience had never been my strong suit.

If I gave her too much space, I risked losing her. And if I crowded her, I risked driving her away. But I had no experience in this field. I didn’t date, and my last girlfriend had been back in tenth grade, right around the time I discovered sex.

My cell phone vibrated again, and I chuckled at her eagerness. But my good mood plummeted into the fucking gutter when I saw the message.

Dad: We need to talk. Call me.

Yeah, like that was ever going to happen. I had nothing to say to him.

Not a damn word.

I only kept his number stored in my contacts so he couldn’t catch me unaware. Whatever Timothy Holden wanted, he could rot in hell for all I cared.

Noah: Not interested. Don’t call me again.

I hit send and did what I should have done a long time ago—blocked his number.

He was my past.

I refused to let him jeopardize my future.
