Deep down, I knew that.

But sometimes, it got buried so far under the daily struggles, the constant little voice in my head telling me that I needed to hide my body, my imperfections, to make myself less, that it was impossible to feel it.

“Want to know a secret, shortcake?” he whispered. I nodded, inhaling a sharp breath as his lips ghosted over mine. “I can see the fear in your eyes. You’re scared of me… of what this thing might become between us. But you’re not the only one, Aurora. Be scared with me, shortcake. Be—”

I kissed him. Grabbing his jersey, I pulled Noah into me and kissed him with everything that I had.

Deep laughter rumbled in his chest as he curved an arm around my back and pressed me closer until our bodies were aligned in perfect symmetry. He was tall and strong, and he made me feel safe.

He made me feel special and beautiful and desired.

Our tongues tangled slowly and teasingly. It was sensation overload, my heart crashing violently in my chest at his admission and the way he kissed me like I was his air.

It was such a heady feeling, one I tumbled into, falling… falling… falling until I felt weightless. And nothing else mattered except that he kept kissing me. Touching me.

Wanting me.

“Fuck,” Noah breathed. “You get me so fucking hot. But we should slow down. Before I do something we might both regret.”

But I didn’t want to slow down. I wanted to speed up.

I wanted to live.

For once, I wanted to be reckless and wild. To be so caught up in the moment that there was no space to think about all the what-ifs and maybes.

I tried to kiss him again, but Noah held back.

“Aurora, babe. We should—”

“No.”

“No?” He frowned, pure desire simmering in his eyes.

“You’re seriously ruining the mood right now, Holden.”

“The mood—shortcake?”

“Is there somewhere here we can go that doesn’t have cameras?”

His brows furrowed before realization dawned on his face, and he exhaled a steady breath. “You’re going to be the death of me, woman.”

Noah snatched my hand and pulled me across the hall to a door marked storage. We stumbled inside, and he wasted no time crowding me against the wall again. Blood pounded in my ears, my heart beating wildly in my chest as he watched me, a playful glint in his eye. His hungry gaze dropped to my boobs, and he grinned.

“I am such a sucker for these t-shirts.” He reached out, tracing the lettering. This one read I should infinitely prefer a book. “Exactly how many literary quote t-shirts do you own?”

“One for every day of the week plus a couple of extras.” I blushed.

“Adorable.”

“You sure you don’t mean geeky.” I arched a brow, and Noah locked eyes with me, regret bracketing his mouth.

“You know, I think I knew, even then.”

“Knew what?”

“That I wanted you. But it was the yoga pants that sealed the deal.”

“So that’s it then? You only want me for my ass?”
