“Shit, I didn’t mean… Look, Aurora—”
“It’s okay.” She gave me a sad smile. “I understand.”
“You do?” I stared at her in confusion.
“It’s just sex, Noah.” The little half-shrug she gave me gutted me. “We don’t have to make it weird or anything.
Just sex.
She thought—
Fuck that.
I flattened my palms on the mattress and leveraged myself above her, staring down at her. “Let me make one thing clear, shortcake.” I inhaled a sharp breath because this would change things. It would change everything. But it felt right. “Nothing about this is just sex.”
“I—”
“No, Aurora. I need you to understand that this means something to me—you mean something. It might be new, a little scary, and complicated, but don’t insult me by trying to downplay what just happened between us.”
“Noah, I didn’t… I’m sorry. I guess I’m just scared. You’re… you.” Hesitation glittered in her eyes as she whispered, “And I’m…”
“Mine.”
CHAPTER 31
AURORA
“Mine.”
The word echoed through me, settling deep in my soul.
Noah stared at me, waiting. But I couldn’t find the words to respond.
His.
Noah had claimed me as his.
He’d said things before—hinted that he felt whatever was developing between us. But I hadn’t wanted to believe it. I couldn’t.
This was different though.
We’d had sex. And sex changed things.
I didn’t regret it. How could I? Being with Noah was one of the best moments of my life. But that pesky little voice inside my head—the one that liked to constantly remind me that guys like Noah didn’t end up with girls like me—wouldn’t silence.
It wouldn’t quit.
“You’re freaking out,” he said.
“I…” My eyes shuttered. I needed a reprieve from the intensity of his gaze. The way he looked at me and saw straight into my damaged soul.
But when I opened them again, Noah was still staring at me.
“Okay, hotshot. Give me some space.” I gently shoved him away, and he clambered off me.
With a quiet little huff caught somewhere between amusement and disbelief, Noah went to dispose of the condom, and I got into bed, pulling the sheet over my body.
When he came back into the room, he paused in the doorway, watching me.
