“So, you and Sam—”

“No. No! That wasn’t what it looked like.”

“It never is.” She gave me a sad smile. “I should probably go. Harper is hanging around here somewhere, waiting for me.”

“Yeah, okay. It was good to see you, shortcake.”

Her breath caught, her eyes shuttering as pain washed over her features.

“Aurora, I’m sorry, I’m so fucking—”

“There you are.” Austin appeared, hooking his arm around her neck. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing.” She flashed him a bright smile. “I was looking for Harper and ran into Noah. I was just congratulating him on a good game.”

“Hell yeah. First of many, am I right?”

“Yeah.” My eyes flicked to Aurora, and she pursed her lips.

“Anyway, I have to go find Harper before she sends out a search party. See you two later.”

She kissed Austin’s cheek, and jealousy flared inside me. Because that’s who I was now—a guy getting jealous over one of his best friends getting kissed by his sister.

Fuck my life.

Austin watched her go and then glanced back at me. “Did she seem okay to you?”

“Yeah, why?”

“I don’t know, something’s different about her, but I can’t put my finger on it.”

“I’m sure she’s just finding her feet now she’s in her own place.”

“Yeah. Just keep an eye out for her for me. I worry now she’s not under our roof.”

“I hate to break it to you, man”—I nudged his shoulder as we made our way back into the bar—“but Aurora’s all grown up.”

“Yeah.” He gave me a grim smile. “That’s what worries me.”

His eyes bored into mine, and I wondered if he knew. I wondered if he could sense the lies woven into my words.

The betrayal.

But most of all, I wondered if he knew that I was pretty certain I was head over skates in love with his sister.

CHAPTER 35

AURORA

“This place is really nice, Rory.” Harper sat down on the couch and smiled at me. “It’s a shame it isn’t a two-bed. I could have moved in.”

“You don’t like living in the dorms?”

“I don’t hate it, and it beats living at home with my dad, but I don’t know. It’s not everything I thought it would be.”

“Well, you’re always welcome to hang out here.”

“Don’t say that, or you’ll never get rid of me.”
