“What?”

“After the exhibition game, I thought you might…”

“Shit, Aurora. I wanted to. So many times I wanted to, but—”

“So, what stopped you?”

“You’re really going to make me say it?”

She nodded, those green eyes of hers pulling me in, dragging me under until I was fucking drowning in her.

“I’m scared, okay?” I admitted. “I’m fucking terrified that being with me will be too much for you, and in the end, I’ll lose you anyway. That the thing I love more than anything in the world will drive away the girl I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with.”

“W-what did you just say?” Her eyes grew big with surprise. But surely, she knew.

She had to know.

Didn’t she?

“I love you, shortcake.” I stepped forward, reaching for her cheek and brushing the stray hairs from her face. “I’m in love with you.”

“You… you love me?” Aurora’s eyelashes fluttered.

“Yeah, I do.”

“Well, that changes things.”

“It does?”

“Yeah, it—”

“Noah.”

A chill went through me at the sound of that voice.

His voice.

Slowly, I turned, coming face to face with the man I hated.

The man I never wanted to see again.

“Hello, Son.”

Aurora sucked in a sharp breath, finding my hand and threading our fingers together. A silent sign she was right here with me. No matter what.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” An icy chill went through the air. Because he couldn’t be here.

He couldn’t fucking be here.

“You wouldn’t answer my calls.”

“Because I have nothing to say to you. Not a damn thing.”

“Son, please, I need to talk to you. It’s important.”

“No. No way.” I stepped forward, jabbing my finger at him. “You don’t get to just waltz into my life and start making demands, you piece of shit.”

“Noah…” Aurora tugged my hand, but all I saw was Timothy Holden looming over a small, helpless boy. His cruel, hateful words landing like bullets. Tearing through muscle and bone to rip holes in my soul. Until his words no longer hurt, and he had to find new ways to keep me down. Broken. Bruised.
