She rolled her eyes at that. “I just needed a minute.”

“What’s the matter?” Stepping into her room, I closed the door behind me.

“Nothing, I’m fine.”

“Shortcake…”

“I’m just having a crisis of confidence. I’ll be fine in a minute.”

“Harper.” I guessed.

“I thought she was like me. But she isn’t. Quite the opposite, actually.” She stared off toward the window as if she could see her new friend down there, laughing and joking with the guys as if she belonged there.

“She’s hot and knows hockey.” I shrugged. “We guys are easily pleased.”

The second the words left my mouth, I regretted them. Her expression dropped, hurt flashing in her eyes.

“Shit, Aurora, I didn’t mean—”

“Yeah, you did. But I get it.” She gave me a small, resigned smile that made my chest tighten. “Harper is beautiful, and she’s practically Lakers royalty. What’s not to like?”

“Where is all this coming from?” I asked, annoyed as fuck to hear Aurora talking about herself like this.

But she refused to look at me.

Going to her, I slid my fingers under her jaw, coaxing her face to mine. "Shortcake…”

“We should probably go back down there before someone comes looking. In case you haven’t worked it out already, Harper is hoping the two of you will—”

“No.”

“No?” Her nose crinkled. “But—”

“She’s your friend. I wouldn’t do that to you.”

“Oh.”

“You look surprised, shortcake. I know I have a bit of a reputation, but I’m not a bad guy.”

“No, you’re not.” Her eyes searched mine, and I wanted to give her the answers she was seeking.

But I couldn’t.

Because things had already gone too far when I’d kissed her.

“Noah, I—”

“So, who is this guy Harper mentioned?”

“Ryan?” She frowned as if she couldn’t believe I asked.

I couldn’t believe it either.

“I’m not sure I’m going to go out with him,” she said, leaving the rest of her sentence unspoken.

“You should.”

“You think I should… right, got it.”
