“Disappointed by what?” Grayson’s tone is harsh as he approaches behind Arnold. He closes my office door and crosses his arms, waiting for an answer.

Arnold smirks at Grayson. “If she declined my invitation to have dinner with us this Friday. Sweet Emma has already accepted.”

Grayson’s eyes narrow and I feel the tension building in the room.

“Dinner with both of us?” Grayson repeats.

“I thought it would be nice to get to know the woman that is keeping my son’s attention these days.”

The way he says the last few words makes my skin crawl. There seems to be an underlying message and I don’t like being ignorant of it.

Grayson’s jaw ticks. He’s obviously irritated, but he’s doing his best to remain calm. “Where are we having dinner?”

“Bellini’s Fine Italian, seven o’clock.”

“We’ll see you then. Unfortunately, Emma has work she needs to get back to and she can’t continue to chat.”

Arnold nods, giving me a pleasant smile. “Of course. It was a pleasure speaking with you, Emma. I look forward to seeing you on Friday.”

As Grayson walks his father out, I sit back in my chair and let out the breath I had been holding. Grayson returns moments later and closes the door once again. His gaze is steady on mine.

“How long was Arnold here?”

“A few minutes.”

“Did you talk about anything else other than dinner plans?”

“No. Is everything okay?”

“No, I don’t appreciate him coming into my workplace and cornering you like that.”

“I didn’t feel cornered. I was surprised is all. Were you coming into my office to tell me something?”

Grayson rubs the back of his neck. He seems distant in thought. “I need to have a meeting with Rachel. We’ll be in my office for a while with the windows shaded.”

“Oh.” Jealousy strikes and I look out the window, hiding it.

“Emma.”

Turning my head to face him, I know he sees it.

“There’s nothing for you to be jealous about.”

“I still don’t like it.”

“I know, Princess.” His voice softens and his focus returns, narrowing in on me. “That’s why I came to tell you. It’s just business.”

“What business?”

“Emma, I’m still your Boss. I can’t share everything with you. You trust me, don’t you?”

I grumble beneath my breath. He knows I do. “Yes.”

“All right. I’ll take you to lunch afterward to make up for it.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“It’ll be an extra long lunch.” He winks and my body warms with anticipation.
