Between my shattered heart and my hangover, I’ve lost my appetite. “Am I just a sexual relationship for you?”
He doesn’t meet my gaze. “It’s what I wanted you to be.”
I shove down the sting of his words. “But I’m more?”
“Yes.”
“Do I mean something to you?”
His head turns and he locks me in the gaze of his broken soul. “I don’t know what you mean to me, Emma, but you do mean something. I can’t give you any more than that.”
Megan’s words trickle into my memory; enjoy the ride or go all in and risk a broken heart. It could end up being the best thing that ever happened to you. If I’m the first woman to mean something to Grayson since Danielle, then there’s hope. I’m not willing to give up on him, not when he’s giving me a crack to slip through. I want him with all of my heart and I know that now, forward is the only option.
“I’d like to finish breakfast together and then enjoy what you have planned.”
Grayson stops me when I pick up my fork. “You deserve better than a cold waffle. I’d like to take you somewhere for a warm, satisfying meal.”
A smile sneaks across my face. “I have no interest in arguing with that.”
As we walk into the cafe, Grayson places his hand onto my back, giving me the first touch of affection I’ve received from him today. He asked me where I wanted to go and I said Laurel’s Cafe. They have the best soups and sandwiches in town and my stomach could use the comfort food. Before we sit in the booth, his kiss on my head gives me as much relief as it does butterflies. That simple gesture shows me we’re getting back to how we were before yesterday’s fiasco.
“What should I get?” he asks me as he looks over the menu.
“Mmm, I think you’d like the roast beef and mashed potatoes.”
He sets the menu back in its placeholder and winks. “Roast beef it is.”
“I appreciate everything you did this morning; getting my bracelet fixed, going to my apartment and getting my things, and breakfast.”
“I wanted you to wake up and have a good birthday.”
I give him a reassuring smile. “You did good.” I touch my fingers to my bracelet and rub my thumb over the stones. “I truly appreciate all of it.”
“I know you do.” His gaze studies my face and my cheeks warm. “The earrings look beautiful on you.”
Grayson rises from his seat and I watch curiously as he moves to my side of the booth and joins me. With a finger, he brushes my hair off my shoulder, exposing my ear and neck.
“After seeing how upset you were last night, all I want to do is touch you.” Like a butterfly kissing a flower, his lips graze my skin. With the added caress of his strong hand along my neck, I close my eyes, giving into the incredible sensation drifting over my shoulders. “I want you to stay the night with me, Emma. I need to be inside you. There’s no better place.”
Squeezing his thigh through his jeans, my body warms with arousal. “On one condition.”
“What is it?”
I turn my head to see his curious stare. “You use the vibrator too.”
He pulls his lip between his teeth and my nipples harden. His expression is priceless and I can’t help grinning. I admit, Grayson has unleashed my inner kinky and there’s no going back. When he goes to speak, he’s interrupted by an older, round-faced waitress with a one dimple smile.
Smacking her gum, she asks, “What can I get you two lovebirds?”
“I’ll take the grilled ham and cheese with the potato soup and a water.”
Grayson rubs his brow, still smiling from cheek to cheek. “I’ll take the roast beef and mashed potatoes and I’ll have a water too.”
When she winks, her lid shows off her dark eye shadow. “Coming right up,” she says before disappearing into the back.
Grayson’s thumb draws circles on my neck as his hand reaches between my legs. He leans close and whispers, “I promise to make you feel incredible.”
Between the touch of his hand and the salacious thoughts running through my mind, my body is buzzing with need. “You always do.”
