“Take your time.”

“I d-did.” Her lips trembled. She lifted her head a bit.

“Hold still, Kenna,” the doctor warned, working on another stitch.

How damn many was he putting in her?

Kenna settled again. “He asked me where it was.”

Hunt leaned in. “What?”

“I have no idea.”

“But it seemed like he was looking for something specific?” Hunt’s gaze narrowed with suspicions.

“I guess. Unless he just meant my money or something.” She looked up at Hunt. “Why didn’t he just take what he wanted and leave?”

“You said you cut the date short. You surprised him.”

Kenna’s eyes went wide. “He was followed.”

“Who?”

That’s what Max wanted to know.

“Kyle stopped by to say goodbye right before I left.”

“Why would someone follow Kyle to your place?” Hunt asked.

“I don’t know.” She sounded exasperated Hunt would even ask.

Hunt scrunched his lips, then tried to get Kenna back on track. “What happened next?”

“He grabbed me by my blouse at my chest and shoved me up against the wall. Even in my heels, I couldn’t touch the floor. I thought he was going to kill me. But Marcus pulled him away. The guy shoved Marcus off him. Marcus landed on the coffee table and broke it.”

When she didn’t go on, Hunt tapped her arm with his finger. “Then what?”

“I... um... I grabbed my phone and tried to call 911. I sent the call through but I didn’t have time to say anything.”

Hunt nodded. “Your neighbors called, too. I was on duty. When they told me it was you, I rushed over to help.”

“Thank you. That’s nice, considering.”

Hunt glanced over at Max, as shocked as he was that Kenna thought a Wilde wouldn’t help her because they broke up. It punched him right in the gut that she believed that.

“What happened before the police arrived?” Hunt nudged her to continue.

“The guy was coming after me again, but Marcus slammed his shoulder into the guy’s midsection. But theguy... he... he pulled a knife. I jumped on the guy’s back and tried to stop him.”

Max swore under his breath and thought of all the terrible things that could have happened to her.

“It happened so fast.Bam, bam, bam.He stabbed him. He just... stabbed him again and again like it was nothing. He slammed me back into the wall. I hit my head again and let go of him and somehow pulled off his mask. Marcus dropped to the floor. The guy... he called me a bitch, then...”

“What?” Hunt leaned in.

“I could hear the sirens and someone outside calling my name.”

Probably one of her neighbors, Max thought.
