Max kissed her on the head, hugged her close, and whispered, “Everything is finally right again.”

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Max and Kenna were sitting at the kitchen table locked in a kiss when his dad came in and cleared his throat. Max kissed Kenna one last time, put her coffee in her hand, enjoyed seeing the blush on her cheeks and the lust in her eyes before he turned to his dad. “Morning.”

“Morning, you two.” Amusement filled his dad’s voice. “What’s with all the boxes in the living room?”

Max sat back in his seat. “Kenna and I are headed out to chop down a tree to decorate for Christmas.”

“It’s been so busy around here, I wasn’t sure we’d get to it in time.” His dad poured himself a cup of coffee.

“We’ve done the tree every year, but we haven’t decorated in the way Mom liked to do.”

His dad grinned at Kenna. “I knew having you here would be a good thing.”

Kenna’s eyes filled with surprise and warmth. “Thank you.”

His dad held his mug out toward Max. “He’s happy. I’m happy. But the changes you two are talking aboutmaking, for the house and celebrating the holiday, it’s all breathing life back into this place. It feels like a home again.”

Max appreciated how his dad made Kenna feel welcome. But this was so much more and it warmed his heart to see this softer, gentler, open side to his dad. He’d changed since Mom died and he had a health scare. Max didn’t like what brought it on, but he appreciated that it had brought them all closer together.

“How was your date last night?” His dad took a seat at the table. “How are all the Wilde cousins?”

“We had a lot of fun. But it was an interesting night.” Kenna’s understatement made Max grin.

“What happened?” his dad asked.

“Hillary was there.” Max sipped his coffee.

His dad scowled. “I hope that didn’t ruin your night.”

“Not at all.” Kenna waved that away. “Max and I won’t let her ruin anything between us ever again. But it was nice to see Aria put Hillary in her place.”

“I think you better tell me what happened?” Dad’s gaze turned sharp and alert.

Max told him about Hillary and Dan and the whole scene last night.

His dad shook his head. “That girl Hillary sure has caused some trouble in this family.”

“Well, she won’t anymore,” Max said. “Aria banned her from the bar. Kenna and I know what really happened back in the day and are back together. Nothing is going to tear us apart again. And Aria... She’s smart and better than any man deserves, especially that pieceof shit Dan. She’ll find someone new who comes close to being good enough for her.”

His dad raised a mug to that. “I spoke with your uncle day before yesterday. He said there’s some trouble around Lyric.”

Max easily guessed what the trouble was. “If you’re talking about the biker guy who comes into the bar, I don’t think he’s as much trouble as people think. He likes her. More than that, I think he wants her. He protected her last night when Dan tried to get Lyric on his side.”

“Like she’d defend a guy who cheated on her sister.” Dad scoffed.

“Exactly.”

Dad shook his head. “Not that guy. Someone else has been making a nuisance of himself. She’s only said something to her dad and asked him to talk to Hunt about running a background check on the guy.”

Max folded his arms over his chest. “Did Hunt do it?”

“He’s working on it.”

“Good.” Max unfolded his arms. “Let me know what Hunt finds out. If Lyric needs help with anything, I’m in.”

His dad nodded.
