“Yeah?”

He cupped her cheek. “I missed you so damn much.”

She leaned into his palm. “I missed you, too. More than I can say. More than I ever want to feel again.”

That made his day. “Same, sweetheart. It was killing me, living without you.”

His dad was right about him telling her that. The amazed and stunned look on her face transformed into a look of pure appreciation and love.

“Max.”

He couldn’t help himself, he kissed her, holding her close, his tongue sweeping along hers, until the taste and feel of her was all he knew. “If I didn’t have Eliza tonight, I’d be here with you.”

“I understand. I’ll just keep distracting myself by babying the horses until dinner.”

“I’d really like to direct your attention my way, but I need to run up to the house and shower before I go.” He regretted not being able to turn that kiss into much, much, more.

“Now there’s an image.”

He smirked. “You remember me naked, right?”

“Vaguely,” she teased him. “I’ll need a refresher.”

God, he couldn’t wait. “Anytime. Except right now, unfortunately.”

She went quiet for a moment. “I wish all of this was over and that my brother was safe.”

“Me, too. I’d take you with me tonight...”

She shook her head. “It’s too dangerous. Bad enough I’ve put you and your dad and everyone here in jeopardy, I wouldn’t want anything to happen to your little niece.”

He cupped her face and brushed his thumbs across her soft cheeks. “I wish I could take you out on a real date.”

“I’d like that. But I also like just being here with you.”

He felt the same way. In fact, he didn’t want her to leave. And that meant he needed to step up his game and make it so she wanted to stay.

Kenna was in her room, in bed, reading a book when a text message dinged on her phone. She opened the text and smiled at the silly picture of Max and Eliza, who both had a bunch of colorful barrettes and hair ties all over their heads. They were making silly faces.

MAX:Eliza thinks Hunt’s fiancé Cyn is better at doing hair than me

MAX:I think Eliza killed it on my hair

MAX:What do you think?

KENNA:You’re gorgeous!!!

KENNA:And sweet

KENNA:What a lucky girl!

It pinched her heart just a little to see him having so much fun with Eliza, because it could be their little girl he was playing with. If they’d stayed together, they’d have been married by now and probably had their own bundle of joy. He’d be such a good dad, because he was a good man.

As if he read her mind, he texted...

MAX:I want it all

MAX:You
