He swore under his breath and cursed Hunt for getting married, even though he didn’t really mean it. “I’m sorry. My timing sucks.”

She inhaled a calming breath and brushed her hand over his heart. “It’s okay. That’s been building for a while now.”

“I don’t know how much longer I can wait,” he confessed

She rubbed both hands up and down his chest. “I’ll be here when you get home.”

He slipped his hand up under her hair and pulled her in for a soft, lingering kiss. “I hope this good luck holds through tonight and I take the others for all their worth at poker before I come home to you.”

Her earnest gaze met his. “I look forward to seeing you later tonight.”

Now that was an invitation he’d never turn down.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Max had a great night at Hunt’s bachelor party. He ate a great meal, toasted his brother and wished him a long and happy life with his soon-to-be wife, left the poker table a hundred and twenty bucks richer, and arrived home mostly sober and thinking about the woman who was never off his mind.

“It was a good night,” his dad said, cutting the engine and opening his door.

“Hunt’s happy.” Max exited his side and met his dad at the front of the truck.

“I haven’t seen you this happy in a long time. I hope when this business is over, I see just as much of her then as I do now.”

Max grinned as they approached the front door, where Tom was standing guard. “You like having her here.”

“I like seeing you with her.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“Good-night.” His dad slapped him on the back and headed inside.

Max stopped to talk to Tom in the foyer. “Everything okay?”

“All good. She’s in her room. Light’s still on.” Tom remained professional, but Max caught the gleam of amusement in his eyes.

Everyone on the ranch knew they’d gotten back together.

Max preferred it that way and hoped Kenna was waiting up for him. “Any news on Kyle or Marcus’s murderer?”

“I can’t be specific but I think this will be over soon.”

“Good to hear.” He hated that it meant more heartache for Kenna. But the sooner Kenna had her freedom back, the better. She missed teaching, her kids, and seeing her friends and family. She hadn’t been able to speak to her parents since this happened.

Max headed up the stairs, anticipation riding him hard, his heart speeding up the closer he got to Kenna’s door. He tapped lightly, just in case she’d fallen asleep.

Nope. There she was, opening the door wearing just a T-shirt with a chicken on it that said, My Hen Can Count Her Own Eggs. She’s a Mathemachicken.

He chuckled. “Cute shirt.”

“If you like this, you should see what’s I have on under it.”

Max dropped his voice, so Tom didn’t overhear him. “Are you ready to show me?”

She stepped right up to him, went up on tiptoe, and kissed him softly. “So ready.”

He brushed a kiss to her lips. “You sure?”

“That I want you and can’t wait to be with you again? Yeah. I’m sure.”
