“What’s wrong?”

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m feeling better. Why?”

“You seem to understand that Kyle’s dead, but you’re not sad. Not like you miss him. Your parents are wrecked. But you’re not. Not like you were about Marcus.” He studied her face, looking for something he didn’t see.

It hit her that he was right. “I don’t know what it is. When I think about Kyle, I logically understand what happened. But it doesn’t feel real. It feels wrong. I can’t explain it. I miss him. I want to see him. I want him back. But...” Tears slipped down her face.

Max brushed them away with his thumbs. “I know. I’m sorry. People grieve in their own way. You’ve had a lot happen in the last couple days. You’re dealing with a lot. I guess I’m just worried that at some point the grief is going to hit you and make you worse.”

“Maybe it will. And that’s okay. It’s supposed to be that way. I’ll get through it, because I have you to hold me when I’m sad and love me through it, just like you’ve done while I’ve been here in the hospital.”

He cupped her cheek. “I just want you to be okay.”

She tried to reassure him. “I am for the most part. The rest will come in time.”

He gave her another sweet kiss, and a huge smile spread across his handsome face. “I’m taking you home.”

She took a minute to think about what moving in with him really meant. “Is your father okay with this?”

“He wants me to be happy. He said it’s been nice having a woman in the house again.”

“That’s not the same as me moving in.”

“It’s going to be fine,” he assured her. “We’ll figure it out as we go. We’ll clean out your apartment when you’re feeling up to it. It’ll be a long drive for you to get to work, though.”

“Then we’ll both be up early.”

A serious look came over him. “Do you mind living there with my dad?”

“It’s a big house, Max. We’ll have our privacy on your side of the house. He has his on the other. I think we can make it work just fine.”

“Whatever you need to feel comfortable there, we’ll make it happen.”

“I know you will. I’m looking forward to coming home to you and not an empty apartment anymore.”

“I feel the same way.”

“Promise me something.”

“Anything,” he readily replied.

“That whenever something happens between us, we’ll always take the time to talk about it, no matter how hard it may seem to say something or how long it takes for us to solve it.” She didn’t want to ever repeat past mistakes.

“I promise.”

“I promise, too.” She smiled at him. “One more thing.”

“What?”

“Can we stop for pizza on the way home? I’m starving.”

He leaned in and kissed her. “Anything you want.”

“You. Always you.”

“That’s good. Because you’re stuck with me.” He kissed her again, this time holding the sweet touch as he stared into her eyes.
