“Right there,” she said, pointing. “Rightthere.”

The beep stayed steady and loud and…flat.

“Shit,” she whispered.

“Raven,” someone else tried.

“More,” she ordered.

“Raven—”

“More,”she snapped.

Gloved hands were there again, working with her.

But his pulse didn’t change.

“Raven, you have to stop.”

She recognized the voice of one of the other doctors, John, and didn’t give a fuck. Just kept moving.

“Stop,” John ordered softly.

“No,” Raven whispered, not stopping, not fuckingstopping.

“You need to st—”

“No,” she snapped, focused on that wound. And then…there.Relief poured through her. She saw it, saw the hole in the artery, and clamped it. “Go it.” She looked up. “Pack it. Quick.”

She looked up, saw it was Lex.

Registered vaguely that he was as strong as she’d imagined, knew that she wouldn’t be able to break free of his hold. She couldn’t, anyway.

Not when her cool, professional focus was fading. Not when her past—dearfuckingGod—herpasthad—

“I killed him,” she whispered.

Lex’s arm tightened. “He’s going to be okay.”

The steady scream of the monitor belied his words.

“I killed him,” she whispered again, unable to look away from that straight line. Because this wasn’t happening, this couldn’t be happening. Not again. Not the man she loved.

Not when things were so fuckinggood. Not when she loved him so damned deeply.

Not when he was herfuture.

“You didn’t kill him,” Lex said. “You saved him and he’sgoing to be okay.”

But she wasn’t so far gone as to not recognize the uncertainty in his voice. To recognize that this big, strong, manly man who could fend off enemies and fu—

A sob ripped through her chest.

She gritted her teeth, held back the others that so desperately wanted to come.
