Bliss could sense Kirk’s confusion all the way from Minnesota. “Can’t you ask him? Don’t you have his number?”

Right. Kirk had no idea they were together in New York.

“No, because it’s for…a surprise.” Lame. So lame. “A birthday thing.” She had no idea when Granger’s birthday was. That was terrible. He’d been waiting on her hand and foot, and she didn’t even know his birthday.

“Right, it’s coming up, isn’t it?”

Whew. A lucky break.

“I’ll have to find her number. I’ll text it to you. I’m glad you and Granger stayed in touch, he’s a good guy. How’s New York treating you?”

Like a mugging victim in a sauna.

“Fantastic. How’s Lake Bittersweet?”

As he filled her in on the busy spring at the lake, a sense of deep longing settled over her. She rushed the goodbye, afraid she might burst into tears and set off alarm bells back in Minnesota.

Kirk texted her shortly afterwards. This is Marqui’s number, but she’s deployed in the Philippines right now.

Deployed. Of course.

She lowered her still-sore body back into the armchair and picked up her knitting again.

Should she call Marqui, even just to let her know what had happened? Granger might not want that. He might not want to worry his sister. It wasn’t as if he was at death’s door. The doctors insisted he would make a full recovery. It ought to be his decision.

Just like it was her decision when to tell her family about her pregnancy.

She tried to recall what else she knew about Granger’s family. He had a number of foster siblings, but was closest to Marqui. His mother was dead. And his father…she’d never heard him say one word about his father. She didn’t know if he was dead or alive.

She reached the end of the row and turned the blanket to start the next one.

He got hurt protecting you. Now it’s your turn. This isn’t something you can hand off to someone else. You can’t run away from this.

But the baby…it’s too much.

Who says it’s too much?

But I’m flaky flighty Bliss.Knit purl, knit purl, yarn over, purl purl.

You know that’s not really you. This is fear talking. You’re afraid.

For good reason.

Yes, but that doesn’t matter. If you were hurt, Granger would take care of you.

But that’s Granger. He’s strong and extremely competent.

Are you sure that you’re not?

Knit knit knit. Yarn over.

He needs someone better than me. I’m not a nurse. I might make it worse. He might get hurt again.

You care about him. This is on you, Bliss Gault. Time to step up.

Face it, she was the one closest to Granger right now. They were in this together.

A wave of nausea traveled through her. Life was coming at her like a freight train right now. It was all so much. Too much.
