Beside him, Carly frowned, seemingly unaware of this plan of Sebastian’s.

There was more than one she was unaware of and Oliver shifted slightly in his seat. He should tell her about that. Soon.

Lindsey nodded. “Be careful. He’ll be automating your inventory system soon enough,” she said, typing in their order again. “Okay, think I got it.” She crossed her fingers and walked away.

Oliver hated to bring up the other man on their date, but he had to ask, “So...the whole you and Sebastian thing...?”

Carly raised an eyebrow as she turned in the seat to face him. “I told you there was never a thing.” Her voice softened as she leaned closer. “There’s always just been you.”

Oliver’s heart skipped at the words and he wrapped his arm around her, settling back in the booth to enjoy his first date in forever, with the only woman he could see a new forever with.

THEDINNERDATEhad been everything Carly had been hoping for. Laid-back, casual, fun, but with a new air of energy around them that had her feeling like they’d embarked on a whole new journey together. They’d chatted like they always did, talked about all the familiar things—the tourist season, Tess, the new kitten Oliver and Tess had adopted—but this time they did it while holding hands and sharing long, desire-filled looks.

By the time Oliver walked her back to her apartment, Carly felt like she was floating on air.

“Well, thank you for the best first date I’ve ever had,” she said on the sidewalk in front of the steps leading up to her place.

“Likewise,” he said. He was still holding her hand and he leaned in to kiss her cheek.

She gripped his face and pulled him toward her for a real kiss. They were standing on the sidewalk on Main Street with lots of locals and tourists around, but she didn’t care who saw. His declaration in the diner told her he didn’t care either.

They weren’t hiding anything. From anyone. Not anymore.

He pulled back slowly and rested his head against hers. “I guess this is where I say good-night?”

Her heart raced. He was leaving this up to her. Did she say good-night or did she invite him inside with no illusions about what would happen? Tess was spending the night at camp, so he didn’t need to go home... The idea of spending the entire night in Oliver’s arms was too good to pass up. Who knew when they’d get this opportunity again?

“Or you could come up?” she said.

Oliver didn’t hesitate. “That sounds like a better idea.”

She nodded and, taking his hand, led the way up the stairs to her apartment, where she fumbled with the house keys. New nervousness mixed with a sense of apprehension as she unlocked the door and they entered.

She’d left the living-room lamp on and there was a warm glow inside. She closed and locked the door behind them, and when she turned to look at Oliver, his expression had her breath catching in her chest.

Within seconds, they were moving toward one another, hands and lips frantic as they removed items of clothing as they kissed. Her dress, his shirt, her shoes, his pants, all fell in a trail along the way to her bedroom.

Inside, Oliver backed her toward her bed and they toppled onto it, rolling as they struggled to remove underwear and her bra, all while keeping the connection with their mouths. He swore against her lips as the bra clasp stuck. Laughing, Carly broke free and undid it, tossing the bra onto the floor.

Completely naked, she moved back onto the bed and Oliver climbed on next to her. He reached for her, but his gaze fell on something on her bedstand and he paused.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, following his gaze to the Sealena books on the tabletop.

He grinned. “Any dog-eared pages in there?” he teased.

She narrowed her eyes. “What if there are?”

He gripped her hips and pulled her beneath him, then forced himself between her thighs. “Just wondering what kind of expectations I have to live up to.”

Oh, if only he knew the truth, that the books were based on him and her connection to him and the longing she’d always felt for him. The fantasies of the sea serpent queen were her fantasies for Oliver.

She reached up and touched his face, drawing him closer. “You have already lived up to all of my wildest fantasies. Now, stop talking,” she said before crushing his mouth with her own.

Passion overtook, and within seconds, they were both panting and aching for one another. Oliver’s hands massaged her breasts, caressed every inch of her skin, and Carly was desperate to have him closer—as close as possible.

“Oliver, I want you inside me,” she said.

“You sure?”
