If only Gage could get him to reciprocate and actually let them into his life and what happened when he was off shift. Did it even matter that he knew his father’s name after thirty-four years of having no clue where he’d come from?

Captain McCauley just might be his half-brother. They both had lives. The captain had a family. Was it really worth disrupting that out of some selfish desire for connection? Maybe Dennis McCauley didn’t want to know Gage might be his brother.

Gage tugged out his phone. “It’s not important right now.” No notifications. “Once the detectives are done questioning the doc, we’ll know more about how this thing is gonna go down.”

They still had time. After the doctor’s phone had gone off, they’d opted to hand him to other cops for questioning and run this operation themselves. Get here early just in case something happened. All of them would rather be in the field than in the office.

An ambulance siren approached from the west.

Blake said, “Did we get any notifications?”

Jasper pulled out his phone. “I’ll text my friend at dispatch. See what this is about.”

Gage got up and headed for the end of the bleachers so he could jump down.

Why were all his instincts firing? Instead of blowing off steam before it was time to ready up for the operation, he sensed something was already happening.

Gage pocketed his phone and unzipped his jacket so he could reach his gun fast.

“You see something?” Jasper took a step toward him.

Gage held up his hand. “Hold where you are, but keep your eyes open.”

The kidnapper was supposed to leave Mrs. Mares here. That meant they had to bring her—or already had. Dead, her body dumped ahead of time. Alive, shoved out of a car to wander the park until she was located.

A guy ran across the grass wearing normal clothes, not activewear. He ran like a suspect fleeing from a scene rather than someone exercising.

Gage said, “Jeans, blue hoodie. Cut him off, Jas.”

“Copy that.” Jasper moved from his post.

“Blake?”

“Right behind you.”

Gage drew his gun and ran after the guy, moving in on instinct more than anything else. So if this guy turned out to be innocent, they’d have to stand down pretty quickly. No one wanted to target someone just living an upstanding life. That wasn’t what the police were supposed to do in the community. They were meant to uphold the law and protect innocent people.

Jasper approached the guy from in front. “It’s one of them.” The nine photos Vanguard had come up with, possible suspects.

Gage tore across thirty feet of grass to catch up, speaking into his radio as he ran. “Use caution but detain.”

“Copy that.”

Before Jasper even finished saying that, the guy darted to the right and bolted. He was fast. Jasper whirled around and slammed into a jogger. They both went down.

Gage jumped a tiny brick wall by the path that intersected the field. Blake ran to his right about ten feet. The two of them raced after the suspect. “Benson PD. Stop!”

The guy kept running.

Gage announced who they were twice more. Ran as fast as he could. He heard Jasper in his earpiece apologize to the guy he’d run into.

The suspect swung his arm back, brandishing a weapon.

Gage squeezed off a shot that went wild.

The crack split the air in the park like the sudden discharge of a firework.

People screamed.
