If Clare could get a positive ID, Vanguard could get the cops an answer and save Katrina the pain of dragging it all out. They’d be one step closer by the time everyone woke up in the morning. She pulled out her phone. “I’m going to show you a group of photos. He might be in here, he might not. Either way, like fighting him, you can at least say you tried.”

Her mother might be more results oriented, but Clare had to know for sure that she’d done everything she could. Not just that she took the easy route for the fastest win.

“How many of them were there?” Clare asked.

“Just one.”

“Okay. Just let me know if you see him.” Clare handed Katrina the phone and gave her a minute to swipe through the photos. She heard the intake of breath and turned back.

Katrina’s face had paled. Her hand shook, holding the phone.

Clare waited.

“This is him.” Katrina handed over the phone.

Clare looked at the photo, then turned it. “To confirm, this is the man you saw?”

Katrina nodded. “Yes.”

“Thank you.”

“He left me for dead.”

“Tell me about him.” She needed as much information as possible—and a face-to-face with the man the police had arrested. The police might not be worried about anything but bringing them all in. But what if there was more to it? What if this guy had something else planned? “Anything at all might help me figure out where to find him before he hurts someone else.”

He might even plan to come after her, the way he’d targeted Alex.

Katrina said, “He’s insane.”

TWENTY-NINE

Gage ducked his head and let the rain fall on the back of his hood. The automatic doors ahead of him slid open, and he stepped inside, flicking the hood back and looking around. The lobby of Mountain Heights Retirement Home looked like a hotel, or a high-end apartment complex.

A couple in their forties walked out of a side door, holding hands.

Gage headed for the front desk, where a woman in scrubs sat at the computer. “Good evening.”

She looked over. “Can I help you? Visiting hours are over shortly.”

“I thought they were over at nine.” It wasn’t quite eight thirty. “I can be quick, if he wants to see me.”

“Who are you wanting?”

Gage’s stomach clenched. “Alistair McCauley.”

She typed on her computer. “You’re not on the normal list.”

“This is…” He didn’t even know how to describe it. “Can you just ask him if he’s open to talking to me?” Gage flashed his badge. Even though he wore jeans and a dark red Henley, he wasn’t above explaining who he was like this. “It’s not official. It’s personal.”

“Pretty sure if he’s awake, he’ll want to talk to a brother in blue.”

Gage tried to smile. His dad had been a cop? He hadn’t had time to look into the old man’s life. The first thing he’d learned was when he typed the address into his GPS and realized it was a retirement home. He didn’t even know what the old man looked like.

“Wait here a moment.” She got up and headed into a hallway.

Gage turned in the waiting area. The longer he was here, the greater the risk Dennis McCauley would show up. The last thing Gage needed was his half-brother and his boss discovering their personal connection. He didn’t even know if he wanted to publicize it. First, he was going to tell Liam—if his sergeant hadn’t already figured it out. When he’d met his father, he would decide the rest.

Part of him wanted to tell Clare.
