Gage wasn’t going to lie, but he also didn’t know how to explain it without Dennis finding out they were brothers.

“You never served together when my dad was a cop. He’s been retired longer than that.” McCauley folded his arms, stretching the sleeves of his uniform jacket. “How do you know him?”

“I don’t, really,” Gage said. “That was the first time we’d ever met.”

“Why were you there?”

“Honestly? It’s not really your business.” Gage knew the captain wouldn’t like it, but until he’d figured this out, it was all he had.

McCauley got in his face. “Tell me what you wanted with my dad.”

“Nothing. I just stopped by to tell him who I am.”

“And why would he care?”

Gage winced. “It’s complicated.”

McCauley pressed his lips together. “I bet it is.”

“Excuse me?” Gage had been feeling powerless over Selena’s kidnapping. This feeling wasn’t too different, except no one had been kidnapped. The circumstances weren’t any of his doing—or his fault. Yet here he was, dealing with the aftermath of it. “Look,” he began, trying to be diplomatic. “When there’s something to talk about, we can talk about it. Right now there’s a case to work, and I need to focus on finding a missing young woman.”

McCauley opened his mouth to say something.

“Gage?” Clare stepped into sight at the end of the hall.

He could’ve kissed her again right then, but not in front of a superior. Instead, he said, “Excuse me, Captain,” then walked away.

“We’re not done talking about this, Lieutenant.”

Gage glanced back. “Understood.”

He put his hand on the small of her back. As they moved out of earshot, Clare said, “Does he know about…?”

Gage was grateful she didn’t say it aloud. He wasn’t sure if he was ready for that so soon after McCauley’s reaction. He might have no choice but to stay out of the captain’s life—and the rest of his family’s.

But he knew the truth that had been withheld from him for so long now.

He sighed. “We can talk about it later.”

Clare nodded, a soft look on her face. “Okay.”

“What did you find out from your mom? And is she okay?”

She let out a relieved breath. “Minor concussion, but she’s okay. They taped it because she didn’t even need stitches, but there’s a lump on her head. Apparently after the cop was stabbed, her and Selena walked out of the room not knowing he was there. He hit my mom with a stun gun. She hit her head on the way down. That’s when he took Selena, or so she presumes.”

“A knife and a stun gun?”

She shrugged. “He knew he had to subdue Selena, get her out quietly. Maybe the knife was to threaten her.”

Gage shook his head. “Did she confirm who it was?”

“Aaron, for sure.”

“That’s something at least.”

Clare’s eyes filled with tears. She looked away, her throat bobbing.

“We are going to find her.”
