Gage frowned.

“And my lawyer signs it,” Alex said. “And I want a phone so I can call my mom. She’s gonna be worriedsickabout all this.”

“Where would Aaron take Selena?”

Alex lifted both hands and let them fall back to the blanket. “How should I know? We only went to the house. There was nowhere else.”

Gage had given it to God in prayer, so he didn’t need to take it back off the altar again.I’m trusting You have this in Your hands.

“I’ll take it from here.” The door opened all the way, and Captain McCauley stepped in. “You’re needed elsewhere, Lieutenant.”

Gage tried to read his expression, but the guy had a blank look on his face.

In the hall, Clare motioned with a tip of her head and mouthed,Let’s go.Maybe she’d heard what Alex said about Vanguard.

He nodded. “Thanks, Captain.”

“No problem,Lieutenant.”

Gage ignored the tone and headed out. They could hash over their thing again later. He closed the door on McCauley and Alex, just so he could say, “Was that about me personally, or because he wants to get involved in this case?”

Clare shrugged. “Who knows?”

“Vanguard?”

“Please.”

Gage didn’t take her hand, but he wanted to. They took the elevator and found his car, which he drove so they could get there in record time with lights and sirens.

“I’ve got my people looking at the exterior cameras as much as the interior.”

“You think he’ll show up?”

Clare lifted her finger. “Hold on one sec.” She put her phone to her ear. “Juarez.” Pause. “I am. Yes, I have it in hand. No, you don’t need to fly here.” She sighed. “You think I don’t have this?” She chuckled lightly. “Told you. But thanks, Zander. Seriously.” She sighed and lowered her phone. “Sorry.”

“Colleagues?”

“You wouldn’t believe how many old friends are crawling out of the woodwork to offer help. Either because I’m protecting an asset of theirs, or information they’re connected to, or they’re just bored. Zander’s baby is teething.” She shot Gage a smile. “He needs a mission so he can get some rest kicking down doors and bagging suspects.”

Gage snorted. “Sounds like an interesting guy.”

“Do we think he’ll show up to get the diamonds?”

“Or send someone like he did with the doctor. So we need to be ready for anything.” Gage pulled into the parking lot of her building. “With all the personnel around, and police presence, he isn’t going to be able to sneak inside. Unless you have a back door.” He threw the car in park.

Clare twisted in her seat to face him. “Depends.” He liked the smirk on her face. “Are you willing to sign an NDA?”

“You want a nondisclosure agreement for information about your entry and exit points?”

“Uh,yeah.” She shook her head. “My team can work this. Don’t worry. He won’t get inside.” She shifted in her seat. “I just want whatever happens to be fast so I can get Selena back. Every hour she’s gone…”

He looked at his watch. “It’s been too long.”

Clare started to speak again, but his phone rang.

The screen saidCaptain McCauley. He stared for a moment, then answered, “Did Alex give you something?”

“I went to grab his lawyer.” McCauley didnotsound happy. More like this was the last thing he wanted to admit. “When I got back, he was gone.”
