“A lord?” I asked.

She shrugged. “You know the British, they have all those titles over there. Be sure to text your sister back, please, so she knows you’re not upset with her.”

I nodded. “I will.”

And just like that, my mother was gone. After arguing with myself for about ten minutes, I finally pulled up Google on my laptop and typed in Georgie’s name along with Vogue. The article Georgie was writing on the fashion designer hadn’t been published yet, but there was a photo of her at some event with the fashion designer on her left, Lady Mary Douglas. And on the other side was a tall, good-looking bastard with blond hair, dressed in a suit. I read the first few lines.

“Lord David Douglas and Lady Mary Douglas hosted a charity party for the Wales Orphanage fund. Guest of Lord David Douglas was American journalist, Georgiana Crenshaw.”

I studied Georgie’s face. She was looking up at the guy and smiling while he stared down at her, clearly enthralled. I reread the one line that stood out. “Guest of Lord David Douglas.”

I closed my laptop and stared down at it. She didn’t look upset or sad. She looked happy. The guest of Lord David—why wasn’t she the fashion designer’s guest?

And what rumor was my mother talking about?

“A fucking lord,” I mumbled, nearly knocking my chair over as I got to my feet.

Chapter Nineteen

GEORGIANA

I stood on the cliff and watched the water below roll in, wave after wave. It was freezing out, but it was the only thing that numbed my body and made me forget how badly my heart ached. I hadn’t realized that inviting Morgan to visit would remind me so much of Blayze. I had given up trying to call or text him. It was clear he wanted nothing to do with me. He wasn’t interested in knowing the truth.

Closing my eyes, I drew in a long breath of salt air. The air here was different than that of Montana. It was salty and damp, compared to fresh and dry.

“How did I know I would find you here, Georgiana?”

Smiling at the familiar British accent, I glanced over my shoulder to see David walking up.

“It’s peaceful.”

“And freezing. Why don’t you come back in? Morgan and Mary are worried about you being out here for so long.”

Turning, I wrapped my shawl tightly around my shoulders. “I guess I can’t stay hidden away here by the sea forever, holing up in an old castle on the beautiful coastline of England.”

He laughed. “When you say it like that, it sounds glorious.”

“Thank you for letting me stay here. And thank you for letting me invite Morgan. She adores your sister Mary, and I think she’s totally in love with your daughter, Mia.”

David chuckled. “Mary has found a fellow fashion lover in Morgan, and it’s refreshing to have someone here who isn’t looking to take advantage of her new success. They both get so lost in talking about designs. It’s been good for Mary.”

I nodded. “I know this newfound fame is hard on Mary. I hope the article isn’t stressing her out more. Being featured in Vogue is going to put her even more on everyone’s radar.”

He shook his head. “This is her dream, Georgiana. I think she’s a bit overwhelmed, but she’s following a dream, and I’m proud of her for it.”

“Morgan told me that Mary asked her to come work for her.”

He nodded. “She did, and Morgan was honored but turned her down.”

“She’s very much a family person, and I don’t think even a dream job could pull her away from Montana.”

David looked up at the cloudy sky. “Mia adores your Morgan.”

“Morgan and I both adore her as well.”

We continued to walk toward the large stone house that looked like a small castle. Turrets and towers rose above the trees, giving the house a romantic, fairytale-like appeal. David and Mary’s family had owned the home for generations. David was now living there, raising his four-year-old daughter alone after his wife passed away during a tragic ski accident.

“What about you, Georgiana. Will you stay in England?”

I let out what sounded like a laugh, but was more of a sigh. “I have to admit, I’ve fallen in love with it here, but I can’t hide on the other side of the world forever.”

“Has he called you yet?”

I had shared with Mary and David what happened with Blayze after getting to know them both and growing so close this past month. Mary must have seen the heartache on my face because she’d instantly drawn me into her circle and had made me feel like an old friend from that very first day on the photoshoot. Of course, I had grown protective of her during that time as well. At twenty-four years old, she was shooting to stardom in the fashion world, and it was clear she wasn’t fully prepared for the success. David was a wonderful older brother, though, and was making sure no one hurt his baby sister. And David understood me in a way Mary didn’t. He, too, was hiding, but I knew that his loss was so much bigger than mine.
