“No, I can’t cope with this. Please move,” she announced with a gentle shove. Rose-Marie looked stricken. “Move. Before I freak the hell out!”

Rose-Marie got to her feet as Mariah slid out of the booth and dashed past her.

???

“That went well!” Hilary drawled, amused.

“Mariah will come around. If the prophecy is to be believed, she is the one,” Prudence muttered thoughtfully.

“But is she?” Rose-Marie questioned.

“Time will tell,” Edith said direly. “But we’ll remain vigilant.”

Benedict

He was surprised when Mariah swept into the inn, muttering about witches, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night. Her angry gaze fell upon him, and Benedict swallowed.

“You!” she hissed, and Benedict smirked, thinking her mad at him for his trick.

“If you would leave…” Benedict said.

He watched as she paced back and forth in a small circle on the floor. Something disturbed her, and Benedict realised she wasn’t agitated because of him. No, something had happened, and he wished to know what. She kept muttering about the supernatural, and he wondered if she’d banged her head and had a concussion.

“Maggie sucked her ghost up in a hoover,” Mariah mentioned, pausing and turning slowly to stare at him.

Benedict swallowed. He didn’t like the expression on her face. It twisted with evil intent, and he took a step back.

“I don’t have a hoover ready to hand. I have something far better,” she whispered.

She stormed towards the apartment, and Benedict wondered whether to follow her.

He didn’t bother, as nothing she could do would harm him. He was lounging against the bar, staring out of the windows, when he heard footsteps return. Mariah bustled about the bar, accompanied by banging. When he finally decided to turn around, she’d placed a large contraption on the bar with three propellors. Benedict walked closer as he examined the item. What was it? It was on a stand, and the three blades were encased in a criss-cross metal covering. Mariah released a yelp of happiness and stood up.

“Apologise for what you did to Fluffers and me,” Mariah demanded.

“No,” Benedict said and stepped forward. What was it?

Mariah jabbed at a button and looked at him.

“One last chance, numpty!” she taunted.

Benedict’s eyes narrowed on being called a name, and he folded his arms.

“You asked for it!” Mariah crowed and hit a button.

Benedict yelled as he felt his molecules split apart. He struggled to keep his shape, but the high-winded instrument blasted directly at him. His body shook, and to his horror, Benedict imploded to the cackle of the witch’s laughter.

He re-materialised in his room and began patting his body down frantically. What the hell had that been? Benedict had literally split into atoms and burst apart! His hands checked for any missing parts. When he discovered he had reformed perfectly, Benedict collapsed on his bed. His hand kept checking his manhood was intact and the correct size. No matter how many times Benedict confirmed everything was intact, he kept repeating his actions, not quite assured he was unbroken.

That object needed to be removed from Mariah instantly. It was damn dangerous. Benedict’s eyes narrowed. How dare she blow him up! This was his inn! And Mariah had blown him up! Exploded Benedict all over the inn until he’d gathered his wits to regain himself. That contraption should not be allowed to exist!

Mariah

It was a day later, after she’d discovered witches or crazy people existed and blown Benedict away. Mariah logged onto her laptop and ordered several items to be delivered today. Benedict wanted a war. He was getting one! She didn’t dare think about the evil he was protecting. Mariah just wished for him to understand he could no longer push her around. A knock at the side entrance made her hurry, and she grabbed the boxes, almost dancing with glee. Let the battle commence.

???

Well, Mariah thought, two hours later, looking down at her clothing. She was dripping wet yet again, but she knew he was close. A flash of bright colours caught her eye, and with a shout, she leapt towards the figure lounging against an exposed pipe. She whipped her weapon out from behind her back and fired it. Benedict looked down as two prongs shot through his chest and smirked.
