“Klaus, honestly, there’s no such thing as vampires. It’s hard enough to believe ghosts are real!” Mariah pleaded. She needed to get out of here. Something was happening with Benedict. She could feel it in her bones.

“Listen, you stupid woman. For years, I tracked any sign of a vampire. Why? Oh, because I knew they existed. I’d seen evidence of them. Ever since I was thirteen, I believed I’d discover one to turn me one day. But vampires like to hide, and it doesn’t matter where I travelled, I couldn’t locate one to change me.

“Then I heard whispers of a Master Vampire trapped in the Cotswolds. So I searched the areas until I found it. The Black Cat. I listened to rumours in the village and guessed what the Black Cat was hiding. But that damned ghost kept everyone out. So I bided my time. I knew it would go up for sale soon, and it did. Tell me how you purchased this first, bitch? Who did you bribe so I know who to punish? Tell me!” Klaus shrieked.

Mariah’s eyes widened as she looked for something to defend herself with.

“Nobody. When I bought it, there were no other offers!” Mariah exclaimed.

“I will peel the skin from your bones and suck your marrow dry. Stop lying to me!” Klaus yelled.

“I don’t know anything! I purchased the inn, and that’s it. There’s no vampire, no whatever you want, just the Black Cat and the ghost!” Mariah cried.

“Liar!” Klaus spat.

The more Mariah denied it, the worse he got. But she couldn’t let Klaus access Vemis. Vemis was evil, and Klaus was no different. Mariah couldn’t bear the thought of them running through the village, destroying its beauty and people.

“I won’t tell you anything! Because there is nothing to report! You’re insane. All this talk of Master Vampires and evidence! You need locking up in a mental home!” Mariah shot back.

Klaus reached for her throat as she shrank against the floor.

A roar echoed behind him, and Klaus flew through the air as Benedict appeared. He took one look at her, and Mariah saw his control snap. A scream tore through the Black Cat as Mariah gawked at the man in front of her.

Benedict’s fangs dropped, his lips peeled back, his already muscular figure seemed to bulk up, and his eyes turned blood red.

Klaus picked himself up from the floor and stared at Benedict.

“No! You’re not the Master; you’re the weakling who refused! How dare you?” Klaus screamed and launched at Benedict.

Benedict caught him with one hand and lifted him off his feet. Klaus struggled against his grip but couldn’t break it.

Once again, Benedict flung him across the bar, and Klaus crashed into a table and rolled to the ground. Laughing, Klaus hauled himself up and attacked Benedict, who was stalking him. Klaus swung at Benedict, holding a broken piece of chair, and stabbed him in the shoulder.

Mariah let out a cry as Benedict laughed and yanked it out. He crumpled it in one hand as Klaus stared wide-eyed.

“You can’t kill me, you fool. This is the most dangerous stage of becoming a vampire. I’m literally impossible to kill. But you, now you’re all fragile human bones, aren’t you?” Benedict drawled and broke Klaus’s arm in the blink of an eye.

“Benedict, no! This is not you!” Mariah cried.

“Oh, but it is me. He hurt my woman, and you think I’ll suffer him to live?”

“Benedict, please, stop!” Mariah begged.

Benedict’s eyes began to fade to pink, and his teeth receded. He reached out a hand to help her up when Klaus struck again. He stabbed Benedict in his back with another improvised stake, and Benedict threw back his head and roared as he fell to his knees.

“Yes! Yes! I killed the false one! The Master will reward me greatly!” Klaus danced on the spot, not noticing Benedict scrabbling at and grasping the stake.

Moments later, it flew through the air and stabbed Klaus in the stomach, pinning him to a wall. Klaus’s hands gripped the wood as Benedict stalked towards him. He tried pulling the stake out as his feet scrabbled for purchase. Benedict grinned in full vampire mode as he reached his prey. Klaus was shaking his head.

“No, I was to be powerful, immortal! Not you! Not you! The Master promised me eternal life!” Klaus almost sobbed.

Benedict leaned forward.

“Guess you learned the Master lies!” Benedict hissed.

“No! No! That’s a lie! He’ll save me!” Klaus squealed as his blood fell to the floor.

“Benedict, I need you! I’m hurt!” Mariah cried, seeing his gaze on the blood.
