It takes every ounce of effort to lay both hands against his chest, to push hard enough to create some distance between us. It’s not a lot, just a tiny amount, but it’s enough so I can look up at him. He must be able to see how serious this is to me.

“You have to answer my question.”

“I’m afraid to.”

“Afraid?” I whisper. “Why?”

He does one of my favorite things, brushing the hair from my face. It’s the physical sensation of him tickling my cheek, but it’s also the intimacy as though we’re a couple. Wearea couple. He said it, even before he revealed the full truth.

“It’s not usual, is it?” he says gruffly. “Laying eyes on a woman, then knowing she’s yours… knowingyou’remine. It’s the sort of thing that scares women away. I didn’t plan on telling you. Not yet, but I can’t hold it inside anymore. You’re mine, Maddie. That’s the truth.”

“The truth,” I repeat, letting out a long breath. “I think I owe you that, too.”

He cradles the small of my back with both his hands. I sense him wanting to slide lower to my ass, and I desperately long for it, too. To feel his savage touch and his undeniable lust.

He nods, his eyes wide, with a hint of… not fear, exactly, but it’s like he’s expecting the worse. Maybe he thinks I’m going to tell him I have a boyfriend, or I can’t do this because of Mom.

“The truth is… and really, the truth is the most important thing to us, right?”

He laughs humorlessly, leaning down, our faces close. “You’re delaying. Whatever it is, tell me. I’m a big boy. I can handle it.”

“If I told you itistoo much, if I told you I had to leave, you’d be okay with that?”

“No. I’d never be the same. I’d always wonder what could’ve been. It might eat me up, but I can’t force you to feel the same.”

“Then it’s a good thing I feel the same.”

He shakes his head slowly, not like he’s telling meno, more like he’s attempting to process what I’ve just said.

“You heard me, right?” he growls. “ThesecondI saw you, I knew you were my future wife. I knew I’d waited for a reason.”

“It must’ve been hard, women throwing themselves at you all the time and turning them down.”

“Not even slightly. I knew they weren’t for me. I stopped believing I’d ever find my woman… and then I did.”

I shiver as his hands tighten on my back. He can’t help himself, and I don’t want him to.

“That’s the point,” he goes on. “You need to understand what I’m saying. It’s big.”

“I know, and I feel the same. I’ve had the same thoughts… about getting married, about having a family together. I tried to tell myself it was crazy. Maybe itiscrazy, but hey, you’re clearly as batshit as me.”

He leans closer, our lips almost touching, a smirk lifting his lips.

“You want to get married one day. You want to have my children. You want a life together?”

“I need it,” I whisper. “Not want.Need, Jacob.”

He kisses me again, this time with extra pressure. I add even more into the mix, standing on my tiptoes and leaning against him, his manhood a solid length against my belly.

This is different. It’s leading somewhere. As his hands slide from my back to my ass, I try not to think of Mom. Jacob told me he wasn’t the one who hugged her at work today, but she was pissed when she saw the photos.

Jacob pulls me toward him—no space at all between our bodies, no space for overthinking or doubt.

CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO

Jacob

I let out a shuddering breath as I pull her pants down, staring at her on the bed. Her hair has come loose, splayed around her, giving her a sexier, wilder look than usual, a look that fires extra lust into my manhood. Her hands claw at the sheets.
