“I know. That’s why I told you. You’re different, Morgan. I know you won’t betray me.” That didn’t stop it from being terrifying to speak a secret she had been keeping since she was a teenager, but Leigh trusted Morgan.

“I would never betray you. You’re safe with me, Leigh—in every way.”

Leigh would later blame it on the heightened emotion of the situation. She had spent weeks resisting Morgan, and in that moment, she was so overwhelmed with relief and gratitude that her resistance just crumbled.

She leaned in and kissed Morgan.

Morgan moaned into the kiss, knotting a hand in Leigh’s hair and pulling her closer. Leigh thought she might die of happiness. The kiss was more intense than her wildest fantasies had promised.

They kissed for several frantic moments before Morgan pulled back. “You’re sure Jake is okay with this?”

“Absolutely.”

“And this is absolutely what you want?”

“More than anything.”

That seemed to be all the answer Morgan needed, because she dove back into the kiss. Leigh had had her fair share of kisses, but kissing Morgan was like nothing she’d ever experienced before. It felt like she had been drowning before, and Morgan was oxygen. She never wanted it to stop.

The moment was broken by the shrill ringing of Leigh’s phone.

“Ignore it,” Leigh mumbled into the kiss, chasing Morgan’s lips even as Morgan pulled away.

“It could be the police. You should answer.”

Leigh sighed and picked up the phone. She felt like she had swallowed an ice block when she saw who it was calling.

“I’ve got to take this.”

Morgan gave her a heated look. “We’ll pick this up later, yeah?

The ice block in Leigh’s stomach had no choice but to melt slightly at the heat in Morgan’s gaze. “Definitely.”

Leigh turned away from Morgan, trying to get herself into the right headspace for this conversation.

“Hi, Mom.” Though she knew logically that Amanda couldn’t tell what she had just been doing from her voice, she still had an irrational fear that she would suddenly be called out for kissing a woman.

“Leigh, hi. I wanted to check something with you. The seating arrangements for the wedding—who is this Mike, and how did he meet Jake?”

Shit.

Morgan

“Mike and Jake met through Richard—he’s a mutual friend. I believe they meet up for drinks once a week.”

Leigh was doing her best to sound casual, but Morgan could easily see the tension in her body language. At least she now understood what was behind that. Leigh had to keep up the act in front of her mother. It must be a terrible thing to have to live in fear of your family finding out who you truly are.

When Morgan had come out, her family had been nothing but supportive. She knew she was lucky, but seeing Leigh’s situation made her aware of just how lucky she was.

“No, Mom, I don’t think they drink alone. If I remember correctly, they go out with a bunch of friends. I don’t like to intrude on Jake’s guy time with his friends, so I leave them to it. Yeah, that’s right. Okay, I’ll talk to you soon, Mom. Bye.”

Leigh’s tense shoulders relaxed as she hung up. “I think she’s getting suspicious,” Leigh admitted. “She’s asking weird questions. Mike is Jake’s boyfriend. I’m not sure what how they met has to do with the seating arrangements. I worry that she suspects Jake isn’t as straight as she’s been led to believe, and if she comes to the correct conclusion about him, it’s only a matter of time before she does the same about me.”

“It sounds like you fielded those questions as well as you were able to. It didn’t sound suspicious to me, and that’s with me knowing the truth.”

“I hope so. I don’t know what I’d do if she found out.”
