Over the past four years, I have had a lot of time to think – about your choices, and about mine. I have missed you, and in the last year and a half, I’ve begun to wonder if it is worth clinging to my beliefs if they are constantly going to drive us apart.

So, I started doing some research into the LGBT+ community. I’ve spoken to people in a number of queer-friendly forums and even made friends with a few of them!

Leigh, I was wrong. I am so sorry, sweetheart. I never should have made you feel as though you are less because you are gay. I accept you, and I would love to meet up with you and your wife for coffee sometime, if you are willing.

I understand if you are not willing to mend old fences, but if you miss me as I miss you, then I hope you will respond.

Yours Always

Mom

Leigh only realized she was crying when a tear dropped onto the phone. She brought her eyes up to meet Morgan’s. “I can’t believe it. Of all the people—I never guessed she might change her mind.”

“Me neither,” Morgan admitted. “I guess it just goes to show that miracles are possible. Do you think you’ll meet with her?”

Leigh hesitated. “I don’t want her money. I’m sure she’ll offer me my trust fund back, but I don’t want to be dependent on her like that again. I don’t trust her enough for that.”

“That’s fair. We have our own lives now. You’ve already got those three very good job offers. We don’t need her money. We’re doing just fine.”

“That being said, I think… I think I’d like to meet with her. If there’s any way I can have her in my life—and have her accept me—I want to try to make it happen. I’ll only do it if you agree, though. Her choices have hurt you, too. If you say no, we’ll pretend like this email never happened.”

“Leigh, of course I agree. She’s your mother—and my mother-in-law. I want us to have a relationship with her if that’s possible.”

Leigh found herself grinning so widely it hurt her face. “Then I’ll respond. Maybe we can meet up sometime this week.”

“That would be wonderful.” Morgan leaned in and kissed her forehead. “The perfect end to a perfect day.”

It truly was. When she woke up this morning, Leigh had had everything she wanted, and somehow, tonight she was going to bed with much more. Tonight, she had the promise of family, both her old family and a new one with Morgan.

She wondered how Amanda would react to the news that she would be getting grandchildren. Surely, she’d be happy. When Leigh and Jake were engaged, Amanda was always dropping hints about them conceiving sooner rather than later once they were married.

“What are you thinking?”

Leigh snuggled closer into Morgan. “I’m just thinking about how happy I am. I love you so much, it’s difficult to describe.”

“You don’t need to describe it—you show me every day.” Morgan tightened her arms around Leigh. “I hope that I show you the same.”

“You do. It’s in the way you touch me, the way you smile, the way your eyes twinkle when you look at me. Every day, I know I am loved.”

“And you will be for every day to come,” Morgan promised.

Leigh didn’t doubt her for a moment.
