Leigh tried to smother her feeling of doom as she went to answer the bell.

She opened it and took in the woman standing in front of her. Did Morgan really have to be so attractive? It would be hard enough pushing her away as it was, let alone fighting off inappropriate thoughts about her. Even the way she was holding herself was sexy.

She was lean and athletic in a smart black pant suit, she looked like she could be a top level athlete in any number of sports. Her long brown hair was up in a ponytail, her tanned skin glowed and her green eyes shone with vitality.

Leigh realized she was staring and forced herself to stop, bringing her eyes firmly up to Morgan’s (very pretty) face and she met those dazzling green eyes for the first time.

“Hi, you must be Morgan.” She held out her hand and Morgan shook it firmly.

“That’s right. It’s nice to meet you, Leigh.”

“Please, come inside. Can I offer you anything to drink?”

“Not right now, thank you. I have some questions about the threats you’ve been receiving.”

Leigh did her best not to grimace. Questions always led to trouble, but she could hardly refuse to entertain them, could she?

“Of course. This way, please, Morgan.”

She led Morgan to the lounge, where Jake was already seated on the sofa. Leigh curled up next to him. Jake put an arm around her, holding her close. This much, at least, wasn’t an act. They were both physical people and enjoyed close contact with each other.

Morgan got out a file of papers and a pen. “Is there anyone you know of who might have any reason to hurt you or Jake?”

“We’ve been wracking our brains about that since the threats started, but we’re both coming up blank,” Leigh admitted. “We don’t have any enemies that either of us know of.”

“Tell me more about your routine. What do you do on a daily basis? What are your habits, and when do you deviate from them?”

Here came the lying. Leigh squeezed Jake’s hand, and he squeezed back.

So, they started to lie. Most of what they said was the truth, but they held back Jake’s regular visits to Mike, as well as Leigh’s trips to various bars to pick up beautiful women for the night. She hadn’t been doing those recently, of course, but it was still dishonest to leave them out, given that they may well be relevant to the current situation.

“Are you sure that’s everything?” Morgan prodded. “I need to get the full picture if I’m going to be able to help you.”

“That’s everything,” Leigh said more sharply than she had intended to. “Now, if we’re quite done here, I need to get ready for the function. And we need to get you ready, too.”

Morgan glanced down at herself. “I’m ready to go.”

“No, you’re not. That outfit is entirely unsuitable.”

Were it anyone else, Leigh wouldn’t have cared what they wore, but she needed to antagonize Morgan at least a little bit. She didn’t want Morgan thinking that she was nice or approachable, or they would end up with the same issue they’d had with the last five bodyguards.

“Well, what would you suggest I wear?” Morgan asked calmly.

“I’ve got some dresses upstairs that should fit you.”

“I’m afraid that won’t do. I need to be able to protect you, and if anything happens I can’t do so effectively in a dress.”

Leigh hadn’t thought of that, but Morgan had a point. She supposed that Morgan’s suit was actually fine for the charity function, but she made a show of huffing dramatically. If she played up the spoiled rich brat angle, maybe Morgan would lose any interest in finding out more about Leigh’s life than she absolutely had to.

Morgan remained impassive in the face of Leigh’s brattiness. “I should check the house, just in case.”

Leigh nodded. She was fairly sure that no one had gotten past the alarm system, but she supposed it was better to be safe than sorry. “Do you really think that someone is going to try to hurt me? I mean, they could just be trying to scare me.”

“It’s possible that their only aim is to scare you, but we can’t assume that. We need to assume the worst to have the best possible chance of keeping you safe.”

That made sense, though Leigh didn’t like it one bit. “Check quickly, then. We need to get going.”

Morgan did a fast but seemingly thorough search of the house before letting Leigh into her room alone to get changed.
