“Of course, I understand.”

He didn’t say anything further or give any indication that he was going to share anything further. Morgan was getting ready to press some more when Leigh’s door opened.

“Fine. You can have access to my emails. This is my username and password.”

Morgan had a sneaking suspicion that Leigh had spent the past few hours thoroughly doctoring her emails and deleting the ones that she didn’t want Morgan to see. This entirely defeated the purpose, but Morgan didn’t suppose that explaining this to Leigh would make much difference.

“Thank you, Leigh. I’m sure it’ll be very helpful.” Not as helpful as it would have been if Leigh had allowed her to see the unfiltered emails, but maybe Morgan could still glean something from them.

Right now, though, she was more interested in Jake. Where had he been and why was he so reluctant to tell her? Granted, the reluctance wasn’t anything new judging by what she had seen so far from both Leigh and Jake, but it seemed awfully suspicious for him just to vanish, possibly all night, and return without a word of explanation.

Leigh hadn’t commented at all on his reappearance, which made Morgan suspect that this was a regular occurrence. Her first thought was that Jake might be having an affair, but if he was, surely he would make more of an effort to hide it from Leigh? No, it had to be something else.

What if Jake was leaving because he needed to compose his next threat to Leigh and arrange delivering it in a way that left no path to trace it back to him?

Morgan personally didn’t see Jake ever threatening Leigh, judging from what she had seen of the two of them so far, but she had been wrong before, and she couldn’t just ignore such suspicious behavior.

Leigh and Jake spent a couple of hours playing some complicated board game whose rules were beyond Morgan. When they finally separated, Jake going for a drink with some friends and Leigh going to the pool, Morgan followed Leigh.

“You should come swim with me, Morgan!”

Morgan did her best to keep her eyes on Leigh’s face, because looking at Leigh’s lithe body and full breasts in that red and gold bikini was doing things to her, and she couldn’t afford to be distracted right now. Her skin was lightly tanned and her face covered in freckles as she smiled at Morgan.

Fuck, why is she so beautiful?

“It’s best that I stay over here,” Morgan explained from the deck. “If anyone breaks in now, I don’t want to be in the water.”

“Unless they’re in the water too.”

“I’ll stop them from ever getting that close to you.”

Leigh shrugged and did an underwater backflip. Fuck, that made her ass look fantastic. Morgan felt herself blushing and averted her gaze, checking their surroundings for any sign of movement, but all was quiet.

After swimming for a while, Leigh spread her towel on the deck and came to lie in the sun. Morgan took her chance. “So, where was Jake last night?”

“Oh, you know. Out.”

Morgan gritted her teeth. “I know that. Leigh, I really need some specifics from you. Where exactly do you and Jake mean by out?”

“I’m kind of tired. I think I’m going to have a nap. Chat later, Morgan.”

“This isn’t achat, Leigh. This is important information that I need to have if I’m going to protect you effectively.”

Too late. Leigh was already going back inside. Morgan followed her, debating whether to keep pushing or not. She decided to keep quiet for now. She was good at reading body language, and she could easily tell that Leigh was not happy with her. She was tense and defensive whenever Morgan was around.

Somehow, despite the fact that Morgan was literally only here for her protection, she saw Morgan as a threat. Morgan didn’t want to become the sixth fired bodyguard, and not just because she wanted to impress Gray and the other guards at the agency.

While Leigh had been acting strange with her from the word go, Morgan had gotten a chance to observe her, both at the charity event and at the gym with her friends. Leigh seemed like one of those people who you just couldn’t find anything to dislike about. She was genuinely nice, funny and empathetic. Morgan would have been proud to consider her a friend, but it was becoming increasingly clear that that was never going to happen.

She would have to be content with saving Leigh’s life—if Leigh allowed her to do so. Morgan was determined to do everything in her power to make sure nothing happened to Leigh, no matter what she had to do, even if that made her unpopular.

And what she had to do was going to make her extremely unpopular.

Morgan needed to start investigating Jake. She ideally needed into his emails, but if Leigh’s reaction was any indication, he would delete anything important before allowing her access, if he gave her access at all.

No, she would need to be sneakier about this. She would start looking into Jake’s past, as quietly as she could. Gray had some contacts in the government who could probably help her get some information on Jake’s history. If he was hiding anything that gave indication that he might want to hurt Leigh, Morgan would find it.

She checked Leigh’s room before letting her lie down for her “nap.” Morgan was entirely certain that Leigh wasn’t tired but calling her out on the lie wouldn’t do any good. She got her laptop out of the guest room and took a chair to sit outside Leigh’s room to wait out Leigh’s escape.
