Gunther scrubs a hand over his face. “I gotta get a shower. Let me show you where stuff is.”

He pushes off the countertop and crosses to the hallway. I follow him and watch as he opens a narrow linen closet, pulling out towels, washcloths, soaps, and other things.

Then he pushes open a bedroom door at the end of the hall. Inside is a full-size bed with a sleek headboard, matching dresser, and nightstand.

“This is your room,” he adds. “Well, it’s my bedroom. But it’s more secure at the back of the house. Anyway, the far door leads to your own private bathroom, so I won’t get in your way.”

Oh, but please do get in my way while I shower, sir. Please? Stand there under the water and make me sponge you all over.

Stop thinking those thoughts, Sara. He’s going to read it all over your face.

“Can you show me how to use the faucets? I’m easily confused by other people’s showers and things.”

Standing opposite me in the bedroom doorway, Gunther studies me.

“I can’t decide if you’re flirting or for real,” he says.

“Why not both?”

Ugh, why did I say that?

Fortunately, he laughs and leads me over to the en suite bathroom.

He pushes aside the glass door and turns on the water for me, explaining how it works. I take in the surprising spa-like vibe of his bathroom. No fancy products. But the floor and one wall are made up of smooth cobblestones. The other two walls are gorgeous ceramic tile, with a built-in bench spanning one wall. The shower head is right in the center. One of those rain showerheads like my uncle has at his house. The knobs are all straightforward, and the shower itself is sexy.

Steam rising, I smile up at Gunther.

Gunther hands me a white washcloth, a bar of plain white soap, and a massive bottle of hardcore anti-dandruff shampoo.

“Sorry, I… don’t have any girly—I mean nice-smelling bathroom stuff,” he says, and I thank him.

Gunther is so cute when he apologizes.

I glance down at the bottle and notice it’s not labeled cruelty-free, but I don’t say anything.

“It was free from the place I used to work for. Shitty hours but it kept me in free shampoo. Sorry if it’s something you wouldn’t use. I ordered something from that company you like, but it’s not here yet. It’ll be here tomorrow.”

I cannot stop smiling. “How did you know which company I like?”

He lifts one shoulder. “It was a guess.” He gives me the name, and he’d guessed right.

Aw. If he’s trying to make me melt, it’s working.

I hug the bottle and soap because if I don’t, I might just reach out and hug him.

“Thank you, Gunther.”

He clears his throat and shifts his weight from one foot to the other. “Uh, so…you have a T.V. in your room. My room. If you need anything else, like extra blankets and pillows, they’re in the closet. Anything else, let me know.”

“Gunther?”

“Yeah?”

“You are the nicest person I’ve met since my mom died.”

He laughs humbly, scratching his chest.

I roll up on my toes and kiss his cheek quickly.
