“The realtor isn’t here yet. We haven’t even seen the inside. We can leave it for—”

“It sounds like if we don’t say yes today, we might lose it. It’s ours because we got here first.”

I snort. “You’re too competitive, Dr. Farrow.”

“When are you finishing your degree?”

I frown. “Which one?”

“Your doctorate in speech.”

“This is my last semester, but I already have one in music education.”

“So, I can start calling you Dr. Cooperson, huh?”

“No, why?” I almost squeak.

“It seems like when you’re challenging me or giving me a hard time, you call me Dr. Farrow. I’d like to reciprocate your sassiness.”

I stick my tongue out.

“Very mature, Dr. Cooperson.”

“Hey, I’m almost twenty-six. When I get to…” I arch an eyebrow. “How old are you? Fifty?”

He scoffs. “Ageist much?”

“Not at all, old man.”

“I’m not even forty.”

“Yet.”

“Well, look who is here.” When I turn around, I spot my grandpa Chris and grandpa Gabe walking toward us.

No, no, no. I don’t want them to meet Derek. I’ve kept him a secret from my family for a long time.

“Are you okay?” Derek glares at them.

“Don’t fangirl, Farrow,” I warn him before meeting my grandparents. “Two of my favorite people are here.”

“I thought you were back in New York,” says Grandpa Chris, eyeing Derek. “You’re still here, with some company.”

I hug them both before introducing them to Derek. “Dr. Farrow is the director of physical and occupational therapy at my practice. He lives in New York.”

“You should move back home,” Grandpa Gabe glares at Derek.

“Grandpas, meet Dr. Derek Farrow. Derek, these are my grandparents. Gabe and Chris Decker.”

“It’s very nice to meet you.” Derek shakes hands with them. “You have a very talented granddaughter.”

Grandpa Chris narrows his gaze at him. “She is, but who are you again? Why is this the first time I’m hearing about you?”

“I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned him before,” I assure them. “You just have so many things to do that you forget the details.”

“How are you doing?” Grandpa Chris moves his attention toward me. “When Mattie said you were going back to New York, I didn’t like it. This is where you should be living.”

“Though I love to be here, it’s time for me to go back to work.”
