He nods. “So, what have you been doing?”

“Buying manuscripts for the publishing company, practicing, and going to school.”

“School? What are you studying now?”

“A doctorate in music education with a specialization in music therapy. Music helps rewire your brain.”

He grins. “So, instead of becoming famous like Grace, are you planning on curing the world?”

I shrug. “Two things can happen simultaneously. Though I’ll never be as famous as G.”

Our older cousin has been playing in big venues since she was young. She’s one of—if not the best—cellists in the world. Unlike her, I mostly record my music and stream it. My parents have a radio channel with classical music, and they play Grace and me often. I only do three concerts a year in different parts of the world.

Maybe someday I’ll do more or just concentrate on helping people heal.

He tilts his head toward the elevator. “Why don’t you come downstairs? Everyone is here to spend some time with you.”

“You know what’ll make this birthday perfect?”

He shakes his head.

“If Archer walked through the door.”

“One day,” he assures me.

And I want to believe that’s how it’s going to be. The alternative feels too lonely and scary. I can’t imagine a life without him.

ChapterEighteen

Happy twenty-fourth,take two!

Hey, babe!

Did you love it?

All of it?

The building, party, and patios?

I hope things worked the way I planned. Seth, Jude, and Gabe were supposed to organize the best party in the world and drag our families to the studio. Did they accomplish all of it?

Now, here’s a little explanation about the place.

You always wanted a studio where you could do whatever you wanted without worrying about the neighbors. Well, this is it.

There are classrooms if you want to start teaching music. A recording studio for you and your family. A roof where you can enjoy the night or play. There’s also a workshop.

You can do some art, play the violin, and lease the upstairs apartment to someone.

Winnie could be a great option.

The apartment building next door won’t make you any money but keep an eye on the people who live there. I got to meet some of them, and they’re the best neighbors I could’ve found you. The top apartment can be leased too.

Love you always,

Archer

PS You should write to me in the journal. I know you’ve been avoiding it—I know everything.
