“On my laptop, you’ll find forums and contacts that might help you escape when you’re ready.”

“How do I contact you?”

“There are instructions under the desk.”

“Don’t fucking go,” he commands.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to help you if I die.”

“We can finish them,” he suggests.

I scoff. “You’re good, but not that good. In order to get out alive, we would have to killallof them.”

“Is that why you’re leaving without him knowing?”

“Yes. As a SEAL, I fought many bad guys, but I always had backup. My platoon looked after me. Now… we don’t have a prayer to get out alive.”

He exhales loudly. “When can I leave?”

“I wish I had an answer.”

“How will I make it out alive?”

“The computers will be here, and so will the weapons.” I head to the kitchen and open the hidden room. “Here’s a place where you can hide. It has a tunnel that takes you all the way to a port where I have a boat.”

“Is that why you’ve been teaching me how to hold my breath underwater?”

I nod a couple of times. “It seemed like a good idea to give you extra skills. Not sure how well that’ll work.”

“I can’t believe you’re leaving everything.”

“They might be your ticket to get out alive. I want you to learn as much as you can. The credit card is in the drawer. Buy classes, software… The sky’s the limit. The car will stay in the garage. If I can, I’ll send you a new identity—give me time though.”

“Do I have access to your streaming accounts? I doubt I can go long without listening to Piper.”

I almost snort. This is my fault for implementing classical music as part of his therapy. He’s addicted to it—or to Piper’s music. Who knows which one it is?

“Yes, all of them.”

“Don’t go,” he repeats, but his voice is losing force.

“We’ll meet again. I swear.”

“D…” He looks down, and when I stare at his handsome face, it hits me.

We must figure out how to change his appearance once he’s out of here. How?

I touch his cheek. “Keep shaving, okay?”

His gray eyes sizzle. I move my hand right away. We can’t do anything stupid. He’s off-limits.

“Why?” His voice is thick and filled with desire.

I clear my throat. “When you run away, you’ll have to let the beard grow and use contacts to change your appearance,” I answer, hoping that’s what he wants to know. Not why I moved my hand as if he was burning me. “That might be the only way you’ll survive after leaving Zamudio.”

He snorts. “From all the advice you’ve given me, that’s the shittiest.”

“But it might be the one thing that’ll keep you alive.”
