The grin doesn’t leave his lips. He seems highly amused.

“What are you doing on my property?” I search for my phone.

“Shall I remind you that you said, ‘Just walk up here and I’ll…’” His lips stretch even wider. “I want to know what’s going to happen now that I’m here. I honestly thought it was an invitation.”

I don’t love that he’s so close, and I have to look up to meet his gaze.

What is he, six-four or -five? He’s too muscular, and even though I could use my self-defense moves on him, he could do some damage.

I have to figure out how to get him out of here or ask for help before I end up as a headline. Single woman found dead on the rooftop of her building.

I shift backward, putting some space between us. “Who are you? Are you aware that you’re trespassing and you’re not allowed to be on either rooftop?”

“Well, that’s not what the lending company said when I leased the apartment.” His smug grin is infuriating.

His five-hundred-dollar haircut tells me he’s definitely not hurting for money. Did someone sublet him an apartment? If so, they’re still prohibited from letting anyone on the rooftop.

“I could show you a copy. We can call the lender and my lawyer.” He winks at me. “But instead, we should get to know each other, don’t you think?”

If he wasn’t infuriating, I would say he’s hot.

“Stop flirting,” I order and poke him with my index finger, although his strong, almost steel-like chest most likely isn’t feeling anything. “And they gave you the wrong information.”

He crosses his arms, giving me a challenging look. “Did they now?”

“Yes. The roofs are off-limits.”

“That’s not what my contract says,” he insists. “And what makes you the authority on what can or can’t be done around here?”

“Who’s your lender? Because if you got an apartment thanks to Craigslist, I’m pretty sure the lease is illegal, and I’ll have you out by tomorrow morning.”

After I make sure he has a place to go, of course. I’m not heartless.

He pulls out his phone, taps it, and scans it until he says, “Cooperson Property Management. Does that ring a bell,Ms. Cooperson?”

I open my mouth and close it. “How do you know that’s me?”

He shrugs one shoulder. “I like to do my homework before I lease a thirty thousand dollar a month apartment. That’s a big price tag. Your company was more than happy to give me access to the roof so I wouldn’t walk out. Would you like to tell me why you were asking for so much?”

I huff. “What else do you know about me?”

“Other than you play the violin beautifully, that’s about it. I didn’t look into your private life if that’s what you’re asking.”

“We’ll return your money and help you find another apartment.”

He frowns. “What did I do wrong?”

“Excuse me?”

His concerned look almost convinces me to let him stay. He’s too pretty and too… I don’t know, I shouldn’t let him live next door.

“I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. That was the last thing I wanted to do, I promise.”

“It’s just that… People looking into my private life…” I almost whisper.

“Again, I just researched who owned the company. I still want to understand why the rent is so high when the rest of the building is under rent control.”

I suck on my bottom lip. “Why would you want to live there?”
