“It’s going to be okay,” he says reassuringly.

“What if he finds me?” I ask, trying to figure out why I feel restless.

“Doubtful. We’ll be far away.”

“What’s going to happen to your farm?”

“It’ll be okay. Eros, my son, is controlling everything.” His calm voice almost makes me think that everything is fine and I’m finally getting a break.

“How many children do you have?”

“Technically, I don’t have any.” He sighs. “I have several godchildren. He’s the one I’m the closest to. You can say I’m a single man with a loving family.”

“I don’t know how to repay you for helping me, but I promise that I will.”

He points at some of the equipment I brought with me. “I’m still uncomfortable with the guns and all the equipment. Was that necessary?”

The guns are in a safety case along with the ammunition. It didn’t feel right to leave Derek’s things behind. They might be my new way of living. “It’s the only thing I know how to do.” I shrug. “I could find a job in a security company that pays well. I have a friend’s credit card, but I can’t continue mooching from him.”

“We’ll find you a job,” he assures me. “From what you’ve told me, you’re good with computers too. What else do you like to do?”

I shrug. “Sorry, I wouldn’t know. If I could at least remember that, this second chance could be easier.”

“We’ll be going to my home in London. That’s where I think you’ll be the safest for now. I know a few people who can help us figure out what you can do with your future. Does that sound like something you’re interested in doing?”

“Anything you can do for me, I’ll repay you. I promise.”

ChapterThirty-Four

Piper

April 10th

It’s been a couple of weird days. I’m anxious.

Too anxious.

It’s that kind of anxiety that grips my heart and doesn’t allow me to concentrate much. I used to get it when Archer was about to go on a mission, and we knew it was too dangerous, and something terrible could happen to him or the team.

I barely pay attention to my classes. Reading is almost impossible. I spend all night playing the violin on the rooftop, and I’m thankful that no one complains about it. Not even Derek, who thankfully wasn’t there to witness my meltdown.

I doubt he would even know I was having a nervous breakdown.

Since I’m barely functioning, I call Lang’s driver to take me to the penthouse so I can change and go to school. It was stupid of me to assume that I would be okay on a crowded campus. The smart thing to do would be to go home, but I stick around until I’m done with my last class.

Knowing I might fall asleep in a cab or on the subway, I text Lang’s driver again, and when I approach the car to meet him, I find Byron Langdon leaning against the car. He’s scowling at me. “What’s going on, Princess Piper?” he asks, opening his arms.

“Don’t call me that,” I say, walking into his embrace.

“You look like shit.”

I snort. “You always make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.”

“It’s because I adore you. So something is going on with you, and before I call your family, I want to know what it is.”

“Would you believe me if I say that something doesn’t feel right?”

Lang places his hands on my shoulders and pushes me slightly. He stares at me for a couple of moments before asking. “Is it Archer?”
