“You were out of it.”

“Sorry, it’s been a long week.”

He chuckles. “Have I mentioned it’s just Tuesday?”

I groan. “You’re right. Maybe I should take a nap.”

“Right after you finish your lunch. Did you have breakfast?”

“It’s noon. I barely remember what happened an hour ago.”

“That’s a no. I should’ve brought you home when I realized you were still playing at five in the morning.”

“You fell asleep during my concert?”

“What can I say? Your music is as magical as it is soothing, even though last night it felt sad and desperate.”

“Sad. How would you know?”

He marches toward me, handing me a plate with a sandwich and veggie chips. “After that time when you told me there were emotions mixed with melodies, I began to pay more attention. As I asked earlier, is there anything you’d like to talk about?”

“Thank you for feeding me and…” I shrug a shoulder instead of saying for making me feel like I’m not alone.

“It’s my pleasure,” he mumbles. “Eat, nap, and we’ll figure out the rest of the day, okay?”

What’s there to figure out?

Lang’s idea about the GPS wouldn’t work, but is there another way to find Archer?

ChapterThirty-Five

Piper

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know. Sorry, baby,” Archer says.

“How can I find you if you won’t tell me?” My voice comes out desperate.

“It’ll be okay. We’ll find each other again. Take care of yourself.” Archer walks away.

“Stop, don’t go,” I yell at him, but he doesn’t turn around.

“Piper, wake up,” I hear a baritone voice dragging me out of the jungle. Derek is staring at me with concern. “Are you okay?”

It takes me a second to answer the question. “Yes, I’m actually okay.”

The anxiety is gone. For a moment, I think Archer is dead, but I can still feel him. He’s somewhere, but now he’s safe. I can sense it.

I stretch and yawn. “What time is it?”

“It’s almost eight.”

I push the blanket away from me and swing my legs out. “Oh no, it’s late. I had some appointments scheduled.”

“Everything is taken care of.” His tone is calm. Too calm. “I have everything under control.”

“How? The last time I checked, you’re not a musician.”
