She says it as if it explains so much.

That they’re their own species.

“Trust me, Benny cares about you.” Natalia runs her hand through her long black hair. “These men just display their emotions differently.”

“Yes, I figured that out when he showed his jealousy by killing a man in front of me.”

“Babe, I wasn’t even brought up in this life, and I knew that wouldn’t end well.”

I nod in agreement.

“He learned his lesson.”

“Do you really think so?”

“Iknowso. Cristian was furious, and he vented to me. Benny only makes a mistake once. He won’t touch Gretchen again.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Benny keeps his word.”

Our conversation is interrupted when the front door opens, and Benny yells my name.

Natalia laughs. “His ears must’ve been ringing.”

“In here!” I shout.

Benny silently strolls into the living room, his hands shoved in his pockets, and my mouth waters at the sight of him.

He stands at the coffee table, fishes something from his pocket, and holds it up.

I stare at the camera, pretending to be confused, and refuse to make eye contact with him. “What’s that?”

Benny holds it flat on his hand and moves closer to give me a better look. “Someonestashed this in my office.”

I press my hand on my chest and gasp. “You’d better go find who did it.”

“I’m looking at her.”

Natalia snorts, and Benny shoots her a quick glance.

She covers her mouth, as if holding in laughter and pulls herself up from the couch. “I need to go tell your father about this. You two have fun.” She pats Benny’s shoulder as she passes him. “By the way, your brother is the size of a plum.” She releases the laughter she was masking as she exits the room.

Shit.

I thought I’d found a decent hiding spot, but I should’ve known Benny had his office checked regularly. My father has our home swept every two weeks for planted devices by three different people, in case one is a rat.

My father has a box full of those hidden cameras in our garage, ready for use whenever needed.

Benny theatrically plays with the camera in his hand. “Let’s go upstairs and chat.”

“Hard pass. I just made myself comfortable.” I make a show of stretching out. “I’d suggest you spend your time looking for whoever is planting devices in your office.”

He stuffs the camera in his back pocket, and I expect him to leave the room.

I’m so wrong. I gasp, not having a second to put up a fight when Benny hauls me off the couch and throws me over his shoulder.

“What the hell?” I shriek, slapping his back. “Put me down, Benito Marchetti.”
