I shove the phone into my pocket, kiss Neomi’s forehead, and leave the hospital to find my father waiting for me at the entrance. We take a walk, and I repeat what Kimberly told me.

My father is quiet for a moment, kicking the toe of his shoe against the pavement. “What’s your plan?”

“Undecided,” I reply, cracking my knuckles. “I could smother him in his sleep or administer something in his veins through an IV bag. Whatever it is, he will die by my hands.”

“Not here, he won’t.”

My pulse rises, and I stop. “What?”

“Killing someone in a hospital is stupid.”

“People die at hospitals all the time.”

“I know you’re hungry for revenge, but you can’t get sloppy. The last thing we need is for you to get arrested or killed.”

It’s infrequent I rebuff my father’s orders, but I can’t stop myself. “You made sure Vinny died at your hands.”

“Vinny was on top of Natalia with a knife. I had no choice but to kill him.” He rubs the back of his neck. “We’re not certain Vincent called the hit. It’s not adding up. Vincent calls a hit on you and then has a stroke?”

“Could’ve been the stress of failing.”

My phone rings, interrupting our conversation.

Concetta’s name flashes on the screen.

“Neomi is awake,” she says when I answer.

CHAPTERTWENTY-NINE

NEOMI

My eyes are heavy, and it takes me a few blinks to get them to open.

My surroundings are blurry at first.

I blink a few more times to clear my vision. It helps some, but your girl is not in a position to drive or handle heavy machinery.

My arm aches as I raise it and rub at the attached IVs. Bruising around the area has already started.

It doesn’t take me long to realize where I am.

The room is about as bland as Benny’ssaltine crackerhouse.

My head pounds as I try to remember the details from yesterday.

Tommaso’s funeral.

The black sedan.

A gunshot.

My insides scorching after being hurt by a bullet.

Being shot freaking sucks.

My thoughts wander to Tommaso, wondering if he felt the same pain. I hope not. I hope the bullet’s impact immediately killed him, and he didn’t feel a pinch of pain. It burned when it seared my stomach. I can’t imagine the pain of it tearing through your brain.

Although I’m not currently experiencing any pain.
