Romeo smacks the back of Luca’s seat. “I told you, it was the shellfish I had eaten earlier that day that made me sick last time. Not the dead body.”

I rip off my gloves and start the engine.

Disposing of bodies is my least favorite part of this job.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy getting my hands dirty.

It’s just a pain-in-the-ass job, where you must ensure every detail is covered so nothing can be traced back to you.

I chose cremation for Alden’s cleanup. It’s been my choice method as of late. For a couple of grand and a promise of protection, our local mortician, Viktor, fried Alden’s body like he was Colonel fucking Sanders.

Alden was the first man I had to kill because of my future wife.

My gut tells me he won’t be the last.

CHAPTERSEVEN

NEOMI

Once upon a time,I prayed Carla’s warning wouldn’t become my future. I wished I’d be that lucky girl who could marry for love, but my father shattered my dream. He promised me to a man who kills people for a living … and also enjoys receiving blow jobs from blondes.

Marrying Benny is inevitable—like starting my period while on vacation or my sisters stealing and never returning my clothes.

“Your behavior tonight was a disgrace to the Cavallaro name,” my father tells me when I sit across from him in his office.

I wince at his insult.

Adisgraceto our name.

There’s not a worse word he could’ve wielded at me.

My father sits in his camel-brown leather chair behind his oak pedestal desk. Like a soldier guarding an expensive statue, Tommaso stands at his side and appears just as stressed as him.

Tommaso’s black hair is slicked back, and he’s wearing a Gucci suit—the same as our father.

I release a forceful breath. “What did you expect me to do?”

My father opens a desk drawer, pinches his lips, and plucks out a cigar. He flicks open a lighter and burns the tip of the cigar. “I expect you to behave appropriately.”

“You’re forcing me to marry a man who just murdered someone in front of me.”

“If what Benny said was true, if he hadn’t killed the bastard, I’d have done it myself.” He points at me with his cigar, and smoke trails his words. “No more funny business. Do you hear me?”

I enact a mind-blown expression. “I swear, I’m surrounded by crazy people.”

“What you did tonight proves you’re just as insane as the rest of us,” Tommaso comments. “You could’ve left the room and ignored the situation.”

I cringe. “Ignore him getting a blow job from another woman at our fucking engagement party?”

This isn’t a conversation I want to have with my father and older brother, but how dare Tommaso stick up for Benny!

“Watch your mouth, Neomi,” my father warns as if he’d rather not speak on the subject either. He points at me with his cigar, and ashes fall from the tip, landing on a stack of Post-its.

“Why are you siding with Benny?” I ask Tommaso. “You hate him.”

“I despise the motherfucker,” Tommaso answers, dragging a cigarette from his blazer pocket and playing with it between two fingers. “But I respect him. As most do.”

Tommaso attempted to be Benny’s friend, but Benny never gave him a chance. Anytime he tried to connect with Benny, he blew Tommaso off. Instead of forming a friendship, Benny slept with one of his girlfriends. After that, Tommaso has had nothing nice to say about my future husband.
