Gretchen throws her arm out as tears fill her eyes. “You said it wasn’t real, Benny.” Her voice is scratchy. “You said the marriage was only an agreement between your families and that you and Neomi couldn’t stand each other.”

“We don’t like each other.”Never lied there.

“You killed a man for her.”

“I killed a man for touching what’s mine.”

Gretchen backs up a step. “She’syours?”

“She will be my wife, yes.”

“I won’t sleep with a married man.” Her chin trembles as she repeatedly shakes her head. “I told you that.” She slices her hand through the air. “Once you tie the knot and it becomes official, I’m done.”

“I know, and I respect it.”

“You used me to prove a point to her.” Hostility grows in her voice.

“I’m sorry for hurting you.” I blow out a breath. “I never claimed to be a perfect man. You know I’m far from that.”

She smooths her hand down her top. “I’d appreciate you allowing my mother and me to keep our jobs.”

“You won’t be fired.”

“You say that now, but what if your wife wants us gone?”

“You won’t lose your job.” I stress the words with as much certainty as I can. “Neomi won’t live here.”

“Thank you.” Gretchen bows her head. “I should’ve listened to my mother and stayed away from you.”

I plant two fingers below her chin, raising it so our eyes meet. She squeezes hers shut. It pains her to look at me.

“Take care of yourself, Gretchen,” I say, and tears slip down her face when I kiss the top of her head.

She’s quiet as I turn away, and just as I’m about to walk out, she whispers, “Goodbye, Benny.”

I grit my teeth as I shut her door behind me.

Anger swells through my body.

I need to get the fuck out of here.

It’s not that I’m in love with Gretchen.

Or that I want to marry her.

It’s just … the reality of what’s happening tomorrow has finally hit me.

No matter how I feel about Gretchen, about Neomi, or about my life, it doesn’t change anything. I will be a married man tomorrow, and nothing I can do will change that.

I won’t only have to worry about my family’s safety, the club, and my work, but also a woman I’m tied to. And not just any woman. Neomi Cavallaro. The biggest pain in the ass to ever step into my life.

I storm through the mansion and toward the garage while dragging my keys out from my pocket. The Range Rover beeps as I unlock it. I wait until I’m away from the house before I blare my music and drive to Seven Seconds.

I need to fuck or hurt someone.

Some people pray about their problems.

Or talk to a therapist.
