“He refuses to meet with me.”

My father scoffs. “He probably thinks you want to kill him.”

“I do want to kill him.”

“What’d he say?”

“At first, he denied that the wedding shooting and kidnap attempt were his men’s work.” I toss the pen on my desk. “When I laid out the evidence, he changed his tune real fucking quick.”

“And what did his tune change to?” He returns the paperweight.

“He claims his men went rogue. He’d fired them days earlier. A few men have personal problems with Tommaso for reasons other than money. All Sammie cares about is money, but they want him for another reason.” I relax my elbows on my desk and groan before scrubbing a hand over my face to ward off the impending headache.

My father stands in front of my desk. “Do you believe him?”

I move my hand. “Surprisingly, yes.”

He shakes his head in frustration. “I wish we could kill the brother. It’d easily solve the problem.”

“Him paying his debt would solve the problem.”

“Temporarily, but then he’d rack up more loans in no time. History would repeat itself.” He clicks his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “A dead man can’t accumulate more debt.”

He’s right. That’s why I refuse to pay Tommaso’s debt. I’m not parting with a million dollars with no guarantee he learned his lesson. I know the cycle as someone who deals with men not paying their debts. Ninety-five percent of them acquire more debt, which eventually leads to their death.

I drum my fingers along the desk. “The problem is, I’d have a wife with a dead brother.”

“Surely, Neomi knows her brother is a liability.”

I nod. “But that doesn’t make her love him less.”

I think of what she asked me to promise her last night—not to hurt him and to help get him out of the mess he created.

“What a pity.” He shakes his head in disdain. “Did Sammie at least promise Neomi’s safety?”

“Sammie won’t lay a finger on Neomi. There was fear in his voice when I told him what happened at my wedding.”

He throws his hands out before wiping them together. “All is done then.”

“But he won’t promise the safety of anyone else. Tommaso owes them a lot of money, and Sammie wants it.”

“Understandable.” He smirks. “How’s married life?”

I lean back in my chair and massage my neck. “More stressful than single life.”

That is the understatement of the fucking year.

All day, I’ve thought about Neomi.

About the taste of her sweet pussy on my tongue.

How she squirmed and moaned beneath me.

Fuck, I want to taste her again.

It’s like she’s a drug and I’m her addict.

His voice breaks me out of my thoughts. “It gets better with time.”
