But I wasn’t. My heart was racing.

I cleared my throat. “If you hurt me, I’ll…”

“Your man on the outside watching the cameras can’t see us here,” he interrupted. I couldn’t see it, but I felt him smiling. It was in his voice. “Very clever of you, by the way.”

He dipped his head and placed his lips on my throat. He hovered there for a moment–a breath. I tried to stand as still as possible, like he was a curious bear, and I had to just freeze until he was through with me.

What did Brett say to do in this situation? Deny, deny, then counter-accuse.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I whispered.

“You’re insulting me.” Hetskedwith a sad shake of his head.

“How would you know that, huh?” I said, trying to push him away, but it was half-hearted. I liked him close to me. “Who trainedyou?”

“A counter-accusation.” He came up, raising a brow and placing his forehead against mine. “Who’s trained you? FBI? CIA?” His eyes bored into mine. “Someone else?”

“Who doyouwork for?“ I countered.

He chuckled, that insufferable grin reached his beautiful, light eyes.

“You haven’t been trained long.” He concluded, talking to himself. He took a hand off the bark and placed it at the pulse on my neck. “Your face is serene. But you can’t hide what you’re feeling from here.” His fingers traced the vein that ran beside my throat. “They haven’t taught you how to control your heart.”

He leaned down and kissed my pulse, as though his mouth was counting the beats of my racing heart.

“You can control your heart?” I whispered with longing.

“I’m a sniper,” he whispered. “A heartbeat is the difference between hitting my target or missing.”

“Are you controlling it now?” I asked, placing my hand on his chest to feel his heart.

“Not very well.”

Chapter 18

Alastair

Itookalockof her long black hair between my fingers. A small curl started at her temple, dented from where she would tuck it behind her ear. I pulled it to my nose and inhaled her scent. It wasn’t sweet like sugar. Sweet like a rare flower, subtle and subdued. Only there if you took the time to notice it.

Could she feel my heartbeat get faster? She must have. Her brow furrowed, like she was concentrating very hard.

I heated with desire, knowing that all of her attention was on me. Her senses were focused on my touch, my scent, and… I leaned down and took her mouth in mine. She tasted like mint, and her tongue was soft and warm.

I had never kissed her until now. Not on the lips, at least. I had been deep inside her, tasted her arousal, her sweat, and licked the blood off her lower lip. But I had never tasted her sweet mouth. My aching cock pressed against my zipper as I pushed her further into the bark.

Our teeth and tongues clashed. She wrapped an arm around my neck. My hand went to her throat. I could feel her pulse in my fingers, and I wanted to tighten my hand until I controlled her breath.

I had spent most of my life restraining the need that she was pulling out of me. It was a visceral, primal urge that frightened me. It was a darkness that came alive and focused my senses on her. No one else would do. No other woman could even come close.

I had to peel my lips away, my mind trying to stop what my body so clearly craved.

“You remember your safe word?” I asked, swallowing hard.I am a gentleman. Not an animal.

“It’s supposed to be yours, too.” She breathily replied.

I crashed our mouths together again. She brought her hands to my chest. I leaned back, putting some distance between us.

I looked into her gorgeous face. Her jawline was so sharp it could cut glass. Her cheekbones were high and smooth, and those thick lips haunted my dreams. I searched her expression for any hint of hesitation. There was none.
