“And how do you feel?” He asked in a cheerful voice.

“You literally get paid to fuck with people like that?” I asked with a broad grin. “You just scare them by cutting the power, and get paid for it?”

“Not always. Sometimes I’m paid to kill people.” His eyes turned to ward me for a moment, and he gave me a closed-lip smile. “But tell me how you’re feeling, brat.”

“Like I’ve just won the best fight of my life.” I was buzzing, practically bouncing out of my seat. “Like I jumped out of a plane and landed like a feather.”

“I’ll teach you to skydive sometime later,” Brett shrugged, as if it was no big deal. “It’s not a very useful skill. It’s more for fun.”

“I can’t wait! I could climb a mountain, jump into a cold stream, swim the Atlantic and… and…”

“Okay, get a hold of yourself. I know it feels great,” He cautioned with a chuckle, “But once we get to the serious stuff, you’re going to crash fast.”

I took a deep breath, but wanted to scream with joy. My blood was pumping, raw, and fast. I had gotten in and out of there. The plan had worked… mostly.

Then I remembered Ajax. Brett had cautioned that this was a fact-finding little stunt. That there would be a chance we couldn’t bring Ajax home today. That reality came crashing into me now.

I told him the state Ajax was in. Brett clenched his jaw, his nostrils flared.

“What else happened?” His face went blank. “With Alastair Green.”

The name hit me like a ton of bricks. I wanted to stop breathing. The knife tucked into the back of my jeans warmed against my skin. I opened my mouth to speak but couldn’t make a sound.

“He helped you, didn’t he?” Brett continued, his eyes narrowing. “How do you know him?”

“He’s watched my fights.” I was avoiding the full truth. “He was in New York. The guy who helped me get out of the arena.”

“The one who took you to Four Green Fields?”

“Yes.”

He nodded. But he looked at me for a moment, taking his eyes off the windy road.

“You are… friends?” He asked, turning back to the ribbon of gray road that unwound before us.

“That’s a strong word.” I crossed my arms. “But we know each other. He seems to… like me.”

Brett nodded. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t judge or rage, but something in the pit of my stomach told me that heknewthere was something more. It was as if he could read my mind and see the guilt, the shame, and embarrassment of having taken that man into my body.

“He’s former SAS. He’s been on the side of the angels for a while,” Brett finally said, slowly. “But make no mistake, if Eoghan dies, he’ll probably be forced into that role.”

“And I’m sure a lot of people want to kill Eoghan,” I mumbled, remembering my dislike of the man.

Brett chuckled. I noticed that about him. Brett rarely outright laughed. He always subdued them into little chuckles or smirks of amusement.

“That’s very true.” He tapped his thumbs on the top of the steering wheel, as if he was using it to help him think. “Alastair, unlike his uncle, isn’t a bad person.”

“How do you know him?”

“I know him on paper.” Brett replied. “He’s one of four heads of Caledonia Security. He’s got a clean background, not related to any investigations or crimes. I’ve allied with that security company a few times. And…” He let out a long sigh. “His buddy, Lord Callum MacLachlan, is your cousin’s boyfriend.”

My eyes widened.

“She has a…?” I stared out the window as the mountain road merged into a freeway. “How old is she?”

“Thirty-one.”

“And she’s still not married?”
