“Shit,” she said. “Do you know where they are taking him?”

“To Duke University ER,” Raina said. “I’m going too. Want to ride with me?”

“No,” she said. “I’ll drive. Maybe it’s nothing and he can be released. I can bring him home.” At least that was what she was telling herself, but she wasn’t so sure.

She popped her head into Kara’s office on her way out the door and told her what was going on and that she’d be in touch, then left the building following Raina.

When she got to the ER, she and Raina ran in and found Jami and John together. “What is going on?” Raina asked. “Do you have any information?”

“Not a lot,” Jami said. “I know he was unconscious when the officer called. They wouldn’t say much. Someone wasn’t paying attention and ran a red light and hit him in the passenger door. The other car is totaled. I guess it helped Jonah was in a truck, but his head hit the side window. They know he has a concussion for sure, but they are running more tests since he was unconscious when they arrived.”

She knew right away the big worry was his previous head injury. She sat down and put her head between her knees and started to take a few deep breaths.

John came over and sat next to her. “He’s going to be fine. Jonah is tough.”

“I know,” she said. “But I also know what happened the last time he was knocked out.”

“And he recovered,” John said.

He did, but they didn’t know he still had issues a few times a year. She wasn’t going to say that right now either.

“I know,” she said. “I just wish we knew something.”

They continued to sit there for thirty minutes with no answers when they looked up and she noticed Sam Fierce in scrubs in the waiting room.

Oh my God, did they need him for surgery? No way. That wasn’t what Sam did.

“Hey,” Sam said. “Ryder texted me what was going on and to see if I could get any information. Don’t worry, I wasn’t coming from his room, but another surgery. I asked the ER doctor to come out and talk to you guys soon as a personal favor, but he told me I could give you an update.”

Megan stood up and moved closer, but she wasn’t family and knew she had no say over anything. “Is he okay?” Jami asked.

“He’s going to be fine. There doesn’t seem to be anything broken that they know of. He’s alert and awake, says his head is killing him. They are running more tests to make sure there is no internal bleeding or swelling on his brain, but I’m sure they will let someone back to talk to him soon. If you don’t hear anything from someone in an hour, Raina, text me. You’ve got my number and I’ll see if I can shake some people loose.”

“Thank you, Sam,” Raina said, moving forward to hug him.

“Thank you,” Jami and John said. Megan nodded her head. She didn’t know Sam that well. She’d never been formally introduced that she could remember but had seen him plenty of times between weddings and parties.

She moved back to a chair and sat down preparing to wait. It seemed nothing moved fast in a hospital, but she was happy that Sam came out and told them Jonah was alert and awake.

Forty-five minutes later, and her second cup of coffee, a doctor came out to talk to them.

“Mr. and Mrs. Davenport?” he asked.

“That’s us,” Jonah’s parents said, standing up. “I’m Dr. Sterns. We’ve got Jonah in a room now resting. We’ve run some scans on his head as a precaution along with some other scans since he was unconscious when he came in. He’s awake and alert and complaining of a headache which is normal with a concussion. He’s asking to see you guys.”

She wasn’t going to be hurt that Jonah wasn’t asking for her. He might not even be aware she was here. “Can we both go in?” John asked.

“Yes, two at a time only,” Dr. Sterns said. “We are a little busy here, so we might not get the results for a bit.”

Megan went and sat back down with Raina while his parents went to see Jonah. “We’ll get to see him,” Raina said. “I’m texting Trent now. I haven’t heard from him so I think he might be in court. I hated to leave that message and have him read it so I want him to at least know Jonah is awake and alert.”

“Good idea,” she said.

She let out a few more breaths while Raina did that and prayed that everything was okay with Jonah and that she could prove to him that she loved him. The thought that she could have lost him with him doubting her was almost more than she could bear.

“Hey,”Jonah said to his mother when she came rushing past the curtain to see him. His father was behind his mother. He remembered this now. It was how it was when he was fighting and when he’d been hurt before.
