He’d been waiting to hear all day and got nothing. “It was fine,” she said. “We only talked about work and a new recipe she was going to try out tonight.”

“See, you worried over nothing,” he said.

“I guess. But I will have to tell her something soon.”

“Not sure what the holdup is. Do you want me to do it?” he asked.

“No. It should come from me. I just need to find a time to do it when no one is around. And not at work. Maybe this weekend I’ll see if I can stop over to visit. I’m assuming you’re working?”

He hated that his schedule was so nuts, but there wasn’t much he could do about the things that were filled in already. “Unfortunately. I’m done with clients directly at six Friday night. That’s surprising for me. If you’re free, how about dinner?”

“I’d love it,” she said. “Saturday I’ve got to get a birthday gift for my niece. She’s going to turn sixteen on Friday, but her family party is on Sunday. I assumed you were working.”

“I am,” he said. “I should be done by five though.” He’d been checking his schedule and making sure he didn’t overbook himself so he could make time with Megan. He hoped she appreciated that.

“I’m not sure when the party is starting or ending. I won’t know for another day or so. If you need to or can schedule someone, go ahead,” she said.

“I’ll keep it open either way,” he said. “It’s not a big deal.”

She took the last bite of her sandwich, then grabbed her water and moved closer to him to kiss him, then went to open the door and leave, but it opened before she could reach it and his brother Trent was standing there.

“Wow. This is a surprise. Or maybe not. Hi, Megan.”

“Trent,” she said, looking between the two of them. “I’m just going to the treadmill now.”

She ducked out quickly and he was left there with his nosy brother in workout gear. It figured the one night Trent decided to come use the gym he’d catch Megan in his office.

“What am I missing there?”

“Nothing. We were talking. Had a sandwich and she went to go workout.”

“Do you want something more than that?” Trent asked.

He’d be honest. There was no reason not to be. “Yes. And we’ll be getting it on our terms.”

“Does Raina know?” Trent asked.

“You know how much I hate all the questions. I’ll give you a summary and hopefully that shuts you up. We’ve flirted since we met. She showed up here at the gym a week or so after the wedding. We talked. I challenged her to a one-on-one session.”

Trent laughed. “Smooth. Rather than ask a woman out, you put them to work.”

“It worked,” he said. “Not everyone sits on their ass all the time like you.”

“I’m here, aren’t I?” Trent said.

“I see that. The question is, why are you back here in my office?”

“Not yet,” Trent said. “Finish with your timeline so I’m caught up.”

He sighed. No use arguing. No one could win an argument with Trent. “I worked her out. I checked in with her the next day, we decided to have brunch on Sunday and see where this might go. She came back to the gym, worked out, then I went to her place for dinner.”

“Damn, you’re moving fast.”

“Not fast, all things considered. It’s been almost two months since I met her at Ryder’s house.”

“Good point,” Trent said.

“We’ve been texting and talking and today she came in to work out. We were talking while I ate.”
