“You two are horrible,” Raina said, smiling and standing up with the remains of her lunch. “I’m going back to my office.”

“She’s so easy,” she said to Chloe.

“She really is. But is her brother easy?” Chloe asked.

“There isn’t anything easy about either of her brothers. I’m assuming you are asking about the one I’m spending time with.”

“Of course,” Chloe said.

“Yeah, Jonah isn’t easy, but we are making it work our way.”

“Then that is all that matters,” Chloe said. “You’re way ahead of me.”

“That wasn’t so bad, was it?” Megan asked him when they were leaving Diane Fierce’s house. It was the last place Jonah thought he’d end up going on Christmas Eve before they went to Megan’s parents’ house.

“I guess not,” he said.

“You knew a lot of people there,” she said. “We went the same time as Raina and Cody. I’m glad I got to introduce you to some coworkers too.”

“Chloe is funny,” he said. “I can see where you two get along and how Raina might have been out of place around the two of you.”

“Chloe is great. She actually keeps to herself but has this dry wit too. I didn’t even know she was going to be there so it was nice to see her. This is the first year I was invited.”

“Really?” he asked. He would have been avoiding it altogether, though everyone was nice enough.

Carolyn, Diane, Grant and Garrett all came over to say hi and welcome him there. He spoke with Ryder and Jade’s husband, Brock, Wyatt, and Adriana Fierce the most. They were all into fitness and it gave him something to talk about.

“Yeah. I think they extend it to more and more each year. They’ve got that big project they are working on. I told you how I’m taking over the books for it, right? The commercial building?”

“You did,” he said.

“Some of the contractors were there today. Walker and Robert Olson are the two attorneys that own it with Grant and Garrett and then there are two contractors. One that does more commercial buildings and one that does more home or office-type construction. Anyway, I saw one of them coming when we were leaving. I guess the other had stopped over earlier. You met Walker.”

“I did. He’s marrying Wyatt’s sister-in-law?” he asked.

“Yep. Good for you for keeping that straight. I even get it all goofed up. There are just so many that come in and out.”

And he’d heard all about how the Fierces had a hand in setting pretty much everyone up there. He ignored those comments as best as he could.

“I see people all day long, but that was just too much chaos for me,” he said.

His gym was a rotating door of people and many liked to stop and talk to him. But most knew he wasn’t someone to chat forever. At the Fierces, that was a social outing that he’d prefer to avoid. At least he didn’t have to put a tie on or even dress up. If he had to, as much as he loved Megan, he would have found a way to bow out.

“You were a good sport,” she said. “I appreciate it. Everyone is pretty down to earth. There are so many kids there now it’s hard to do much more than talk to people for a few minutes and move on.”

“I noticed that,” he said. It seemed everywhere he looked someone had a baby in their arms or there was a kid running around.

He hadn’t thought of a family or a future much in his life.

He was too young and focused on other things when he was with Molly and she wasn’t the maternal type anyway.

Since her, he hadn’t been with anyone long enough to think of a family of his own. Though his mother sure the heck got her licks in about it for years.

More so lately. She wasn’t even pressuring Raina, knowing his sister had another year of college to finish at night. That left Jonah, the oldest, and who was now in a serious relationship.
