“Well, that’s because we provide an exemplary experience,” I said.

“I’m sure you do,” replied Alicia, and as she did, she leaned forward, and I imagined standing up and reaching over my desk to kiss her. There was something about her confidence that made the blood pump through my body a little faster.

“Well,” I said, “I think I’ve heard all I need to hear. You’re free to go, Alicia. Thank you for meeting with me today. And tell Sam I said hi. Let me take you out …”

Alicia blustered and stood up. “No, it’s okay, I’ll show myself out.”

“I insist,” I protested. But as I stood up, she waved her hand, and I saw that Alicia was blushing.

“Well,” I said, “I’ll be in touch on Monday. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.”

Alicia smiled, muttered, and then disappeared from my office, almost as quickly as she’d entered my life.

For a long time afterward, I sat down and scrutinized the file I’d prepared on her at my desk. She was everything I wanted for this job. Attractive, experienced, charismatic, and talented. She was perfect.

There was just one problem.

I wasn’t sure I’d be able to keep my hands off her.

Chapter 3

Alicia

TheminuteIleftJake Ryder’s office and got into the elevator, my heart rate rocketed and my cheeks flushed. I was still breathing hard by the time the elevator reached the ground floor, and I happily burst out into the cold air of Lincoln Park, heaving sighs in the street.

What had happened to me in there?

Somehow, something about Jake Ryder had driven me … completely crazy. I wasn’t entirely surprised. Every inch of his powerful, muscular body oozed confidence and relaxation. I had no idea what it was he’d done to me, but I felt as though someone had cast a spell over my body. And, as I stood there on the sidewalk under his building, I admitted to myself that I was tangibly, physically aroused by him, in a way no man had ever made me feel before.

For a start, that voice … was just as dark and powerful as it had sounded on the phone. But I hadn’t been prepared for Jake’s height, or the rippling tension in his biceps I could see through the shirt he’d changed into. And as I’d sat there in the office, I’d been unable to help myself picturing him in the shower …

Yeah, and that’s the last you’re seeing of him, given that your job interview lasted less than fifteen minutes, said a voice in my head. It was the same pessimistic voice in my head that had suggested I start my day with a bowl of bran flakes and TV infomercials. The voice was correct, though. There was no way I was getting hired for this job. So, I trudged home and settled myself on the couch again before a familiarly annoying voice spoke to me from the kitchen.

“How did it go?” Sam appeared at the doorway, with a sandwich on a plate. “Tuna salad okay?” he asked.

I nodded, before rolling over and groaning. “How do I know?”

Sam grinned, pulled out his phone, and waved it at me. “He texted me,” he said. “Told me that he felt it was the gentlemanly thing to do, you know,” he said, winking at me.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I said, suspiciously.

“Oh, come on, Alicia, he was just joking,” said Sam. “Did you see his office? It’s pretty neat, huh?”

“I blew it,” I said. “I completely blew it. We spoke for about five seconds, and then he let me go. I’m not cut out for working on some luxury airline, Sam. It might all be the same to you pilots, but I bet the hosting is completely different.”

Sam shrugged. “You never know,” he said. “It was worth a try, right?”

“I love your optimism, bro,” I said. He looked at me with pain on his face. Sam hated it when I called him “bro.”

“But?” said Sam.

“But it’s not gonna happen!” I responded.

Sam shrugged his shoulders, then turned and walked away. “You never know,” he muttered to himself.

Iwenttobedthat night with a heavy heart. My thoughts were practically spinning around my head, making me dizzy and robbing me of sleep. I’d been going to bed pretty early on account of how dark it was outside. I looked at the clock, watching the numbers go by. 9:30. 10:00. 10:35 …

At about 10:45 p.m., my phone rang again. This time, luckily, my phone wasn’t in silent mode.
